    Still waiting for further info
Nice article came out now and this is quite true
How then was it possible that three years later when construction on the 186km GFIP Phase 1 began in 2008, the project came with a price-tag of R17,9bn, which was almost four times Sanral's estimate of a 340km project. Let that sink in for a minute; they paid four times the estimated cost of a 340km project, for almost half (54%) of that freeway length.

Existing Treasury allocation mechanisms or an addition of 10 to 11 cents to the fuel levy were by far the most efficient mechanisms to finance the GFIP Bonds, of that there is no question.
Now that would have been the easiest option and we wouldn't even have felt it in our pockets by today... stil not too late. With all the fuel increases these days another 10-20c per liter won't make a huge difference.

It would have been paid off already I bet. But no, we need to fund it for another few decades, right pro-e-tollers?

    ag nee wat

All the cANCer does is talk talk talk.

ESKOM is on the verge of collapse: no plan except bail them out
SAA is on the verge of collapse: no plan except bail them out
TRANSNET/PRASA is on the verge of collapse: no plan except bail them out

    This will be no different.

And the Electronic Theft Company (ETC) spins a lovely story claiming that without Tolls SA's fuel levy would need to be increased to R10 per L

Because they claim SANRAL will need R186 billion annually for the next 20 years to just maintain SA's roads

    https://rekordcenturion.co.za/173692...s-maintenance/

Ok well if you go according to that then SANRAL should just point blank fail now and get it overwith

SA does not have R186 billion anually to give to SANRAL to just maintain the roads

We can just as well have you fail 100% now then we can rather all buy 4x4's to drive on the roads you are unable to maintain for any reasonable price

You love to post garbage! (because I am now convinced that you took it on yourself to diss SANRAL without any in-depth knowledge of that entity)

    • If SANRAL "fails", who will maintain the roads?
    • at what cost?
    • where will this capital come from?
    • who will provide the management and planning functions?
(or are you suggesting that the road network will either maintain itself, or fall into disrepair like municipal infrastructure?)

I don't say you are wrong, but your "solution" (of SANRAL "failing" is about as viable as Cyril's bullet train from Cape Town to Musina via East London.

Stop criticizing, and present a better solution.

Exactly, so through usual budget process, paid for by tax payers / fuel levies / licence fees etc. Now suddenly if E tolls don't work the roads collapse?......puhlease.....

AFAIK provinces are still responsible for maintenance of some roads within their borders.

For example the R51 in front of my house is managed by Gautrans, the old TPA.

SANRAL will never fail. In the same position as Eskom. We NEED them! We should not blame SANRAL for all the mistakes made with E-Toll. Government bullied them into this predicament and now SANRAL has to scratch the bottom of the pot without Government's assistance.

Better solutions have been given from the start
10c fuel levy applied from the start would have meant that every cent they needed for the works done would already have been paid off

But please advise how it can be reasonable of SANRAL to expect the wonderfully rich SA to pay R2,750,000,000,000 over the next 20 years.

My flip that makes the corruption and theft happening at Eskom look like small change

And oh do not say ETC is not SANRAL
It is employed and put in place by SANRAL
And the scum of the roads have not told them to shut up

Edit Ok I did make a mistake and used the wrong amount
It ended up being R47,413.79 for each man women and child alive in SA at the moment

But for a country with more than 25% unemployment (which does not apply to people below and above certain ages)
    That is still ridiculous amount
And by the way very similar to what ESKOM's debt is listing

    so my fault sorry

Oh flip we need to start stressing big time
    https://publiceyemaritzburg.co.za/57...three-decades/
SANRAL just released expansion plan for the N2 and N3 Highways over the next 30 years
    Projected cost R30 Billion
Which working on SANRAL previous figures on "Projected costs" VS "Actual costs" means that this project will end up costing SA more than R426 Billion

(Figures used from previous SANRAL Gauteng freeway project that had initial estimates indicating R6.3 Billion cost and ended up in excess of R90 Billion)
