    Default Freelander won't start!!

    Hi Guys

I really need your help. I bought a 2nd hand Freelander 2 TD4 SE. I have had it for about 2 weeks. This morning when I went to take my daughter to school it would not start. It does a systems check and all seems fine but just won't start!

Has anybody else had a similar problem? What could be the cause? I am currently waiting for the AA guy to arrive, but they also not very useful.

    Would really appreciate some assistance.

    Hi Andrew.

Does it swing or does nothing happen when you try it?

It did nothing. But the AA have been and we put a battery charger on and it started. He suggested that the earth from the battery to the car could be faulty?

Will take it in to the shop to let them run diagnostics to make sure.

I had this one morning, but it didn't happen again. There are some known issues as discussed on the freel2.com forum in the UK.

Flat battery. Esp, since it is winter. Did the car stand outside?

It usually does the check but then just "click, click". When the battery is flat it will not run the starter at all, so it wont "swing".

Had the same on the Wrangler 2 weeks ago with the first really cold snap.

    Dead as the dodo.

The new ECU's just refuse to do anything if the voltage is too low.

    New battery, all sorted.

Our FL did that a while ago.

New battery and all is sorted.

Battery required is 80Mah. Old one was only 66Mah!

First general modification.for a Freelander 2 is to run an extra earth cable to the starter or close. That cable is now standard in later models and well discussed on the freelander forum

and I'm back!! Car would not start again. I have just checked the replies and most of you seem to suggest it's the battery. The dealership I bought it from is coming to collect the car and see what is wrong. I really hope that it is just the battery...

So, just to confirm. Even if all the lights come on, it does a systems check but does not swing at all it could still be the battery??

    Yip!

When you insert the key all "systems" come on and a system check is done. But when you push the start button there is just nothing but a faint "click" sound. No swinging of the starter.

ps....it is probably the factory fitted Netstar unit draing the battery. Ask them to remove it.

Went through the exact same story 1 month ago with the wifes FLII.

Stepdad had the same thing with his FL2 last week. Battery kaput- his is still under warranty at LR and was replaced free of charge by LR Menlyn.

Apparently the did an entire system check afterwards that took over an hour to check if something's draining the battery.

Don't know Freelanders, but if it is an intermittent fault it could be the starter relay that is on it's way out. Every thing comes on but the starter does not turn or click, even if the battery is 100%. Had it on my Jeep and just swopped the relay and all was good.

The AA guy is correct to say it could be a poor earth/negative... had the same thing with my previous A4. My negative cable had frayed inside the sheath... after 3 months of intermittent starting, new starter, 3 batteries, recon alternator, new key batteries, etc. I spotted a small metal strand sticking out of said cable, cut it in half, joined it properly, and sorted! had enough current for the lights, radio, obc etc. but not for the starter... I think my case occurred because when the battery was changed it wasn't fastened down properly, and caused the cable to fray...

    Hi
Is there any update on this issue and my FL 2 /2012 SD4 SE has the exact same issue.

I have a dual battery system so i can connect secondary battery but still no go even with a battery booster.
The car starts sometimes like nothings wrong and certain times with in a minute or minutes, i usually move the shifter from Park to Neutral and had some luck here but not always.
Has anyone successfully figured this one out?

    Thank you in Advance

Buying a used car has its problems, the reason why the previous owner sold it, for you to find and sort out those and after this you will have a fantastic Freelander! Mine had also some problems to sort and now it is a gem! Do not give up!

Try and take note of the steering column lock...when you push the key in, does it disengage? I had the problem of non-starting and it was the steering column lock
