    I just spoke to Anthony,

Sokkies reached Modjadji and all the vital signs are good. He's loading up, himself and 6 scholars and a trailer, and heading back to Gauteng, to be back at LandyWorx for the compulsory 1000 km inspection and oil service tomorrow morning. This is the furthest Sokkies has travelled in one trip since I collected her in October last year, from LW after the Remtec engine was fitted.

No Ross, I, referred to as the PO in this thread, had Sokkies for 8 years. I had the Remtec engine installed by LW last year October...........I sold Sokkies to Anthony in March this year, and as fate had it, the Remtec engine had a catastrophic failure two weeks after delivery to Anthony, the preceding posts explains the whole story the whole story.

Just logged on to this thread now after returning last night. I've seen a lot of good wishes in the previous posts - thanks very much to all! The support of this community is amazing and really does make a difference.

I can report that 3000 trouble-free km's have gone by. LandyWorx did the oil service at a touch before 1000 km, oil was still squeaky-clean at that stage. A bolt or two had to be tightened after the first trip home, a wire for the Madman burnt against the exhaust and had to be secured, and that's all. Nothing engine-related at all. Oh, also the kickdown cable wasn't adjusted and this gave me a big scare as I thought I had bought a tortoise. A few minutes in the dark with a torch and workshop manual and all was revealed and put right...

Lesotho is a harsh testing-ground for a Tdi engine - steep inclines, thin air. The Madman helps a lot with confidence levels. I've got the following general parameters at the moment:

Water temp: 88 - 91 deg C, max temp was 95, happened only once
Oil temp: Climbs gradually until it reaches about 5 deg below water temp, then stays there
Oil pressure: Starts at almost 4 bar when cold, hovers between 2 and 2.6 bar when driving hot, drops to between 1 and 1.2 at hot idle.
EGT: In the mountains and at 80 km/h: in the 200's, 300's, 400's most of the time
Steep inclines: max 660 then I back off, but feel no need to push it further than this ever
Highway with trailer: hovers in the low 500's and then up to 650 on inclines
I've found the need to manually select third gear on some inclines rather than flooring it and operating the kickdown - this drops EGTs rapidly out of the 600's again

An interesting thing about this engine - perhaps because of the auto box as well - I don't feel any turbo lag. I've had a brief encounter with a Td5 manual (at sea level) and could always both feel and hear the turbo spooling up. Sure you can feel it pulls better above 1500 rpm, but there's no kick in the back as the turbo takes over. I don't rush around when driving, but I was expecting a far less drivable engine after reading the specs. There's plenty of usable torque available from 2000 - 3500 rpm.

Can't help wondering what the V8 feels like with that auto box though

Some thanks are due to people:

    - The 4x4 community for support, good advice and encouragement
    - the previous owner of the car for being a gentleman and true Landy fanatic
    - LandyWorx (not only Peter and Ian but the whole team who rallied round to install the engine. I visited them at 10 on the Wednesday evening and they were still working)
    - LandyWorx again for honouring their warranty on their workmanship
    - LandyWorx again (Peter and Ian) for working extremely hard to restore good faith instead of becoming defensive
    - Remtec and their representatives for honouring their warranty and also working hard to restore good faith, with daily updates

Some photos will follow for those interested. Probably on another thread in Lesotho section, but I'll post a reminder here as well.

Meanwhile, I'll leave you all with this:

Glad everything went well. Been toying with converting my 110 to an automatic.

start limping and start climbing stairs funny.

If she asks, say it's your knee.

Make an appointment at the doc.

REGARDLESS of what he says ( ) tell SWAMBO your knee is murtu and you either need a R20k operation or a R10k auto box conversion..........
