    Default D3 died

I am still in shock. My D3 died on me today as I was driving home from Hermanus. She was performing very well and I was doing 110km/h on the Houwhoek pas and all of a sudden the engine cut off, no sound, no warning just dead. As I stop next to the road, I tried to start it again, but the starter could not turn the engine. Temp, oil etc everything fine. I have replaced the fuel pump and two injectors and the alternator in the past month. The battery was also dead after a short while of waiting for the low bed.How does it sound when the crank snap and what are the symtoms? The car has 220 000km on the clock, if do the oil changes myself every 10000km and were adding the poly stuff every 40 000km.
    - what would happen if the belt driving the fuel pump broke?
    - Could a bad battery cause the car to cut out and then not be able to start? I checked the volts on the satnav as the car was standing- 11 volts?
    - The past few weeks I have been hearing a huming noise when the car was cold only above 2000 rpm- maybe the begining of a bearing failing?

The D3 is with Elrico in Stikland. I will hear tomorrow wat is wrong. If it is the engin, I will park her under a tree in my yard and rather buy a cheap car for the money to replace the engin.

I would guess the low charge in the battery caused the car to shut down. Hopefully just the final end of the battery or a loose battery terminal and not anything more serious.

    Let us know.

How old is the battery - this exact same thing happened to us in my wife's Audi at the Botriver stopover at night!

For sure. Most ECU's refuse to work on low voltage. No ECU means no engine.

Sounds like a battery or bad connection somewhere.
My hilux once did this, I switched the lights on, and as I did that everything just shut down and I coasted to a halt - opened the bonnet and saw the pos terminal connection had come off the battery. refitted and I was away again.

Even happens in a Nissan Micra, had a battery that needed a drive every 4 days then 3 days etc. Went out the other day, it started ok drove 30 km. Had breakfast on starting again, strange peep peep sound with engine running, took it straight to Battery centre, battery 9 volts and dropping, was dying a little and it would have stopped. new battery as good as new, sure just the battery failed.

I'll also put money on battery or alternator. Sounds like the classic symptom of just shutting down.

Alternator has been replaced in the last month...
Possible the battery was damaged when the last alternator was dying.

    Hope it's something simple...

Nothing out of the ordinary were notice when the engine cut out. I saw the alternater light come on on the dash and the revcounter dropping to 0. Now sound or anything. The ac very still going ful blast and only the alternater and I think oil ligts were on. Same as when a engine stalls. When I tried to start it, the starter could not trun the engine. The current it draw made all the instruments going hay wire. I am waiting for a report from Enrico. He was a bit bussy today. I would be over the moon if it is the battery. But one never knows with these fancy engins.

Definitely sounds like battery. When the motor goes, it does not normally cut out, it prefers limp mode.

Sounds like a battery issue. Had an old Merc (270,000kms when I sold it, and yes I had a sedan before I moved to Africa and saw the light!) which died in the same way on the side of the M5 motorway (England). Turned out the belt (to the alternator I think) had snapped and the battery wouldn't charge. Simple fix in the end.

Ok I just had a look at the car and it is clear that the crank pulley is not aligned and that there is some oil at the bottom of the engine. The crank did snap. So this disco will most probably go and stand under my carport and rust. I cannot sell it, as the outstanding amount is to high. I will keep you posted
