    Hi Defender110V8

I would like an opinion from Sean on this. I am still doubtful, that the torque converter or gearbox is the guilty party for a crank snap. I personally believe that the flex plate will break, long before a crank would snap because of a gearbox related issue.

Lets see what the specialist comes up with. If I would be wrong, I would openly state this on this forum. Nobody is perfect

Well, now that I have read Peter's post I have perished the thought of using Poly-TFE in my V8 engine. My mind is made up to simply stick to Castrol Edge Professional A5 5w30 every 10k.

It is so good to see someone else local with that same metalic rasp. I have found cases of it overseas and the most common diagnosis seems to be a chain rattle or something like that in the transfer case. And when people tried to get responses from the manufacturer and land rover...seems that the noise just becomes a characteristic and i havnt seen any case where it leads to a failure.

With me it happens especially under gentle throttle in most gears...and then does it briefly when i take my foot off the throttle in slower driving. The sound does not change with speed etc...and is like u say a metalic rasp type sound. I took mine to land rover durban, land rover Empangeni, a gearbox and diff workshop in durban and another one in empangeni. No one really knows what it is and say its not gearbox or diff and nothing to worry about.... but id love to find the exact caus and find a solution!

Ive considered taking a trip one day to see if Sean at gearbox co. can find a fix maybe?

I had new torque converter fitted and flushed gearbox...changes smoothly with no judder etc...only this sound

Dont know . Mine made a noise when changing to third that was still there , albeit quieter , after my torque converter was fixed . It was gone totally after the solenoid pack was cleaned .
Most of the gearbox companies I contacted with my torque converter problems told me that they open up and clean out the gearbox at the same time as the torque converter . I suspect that most of the time they do not actually need to replace the torque converter , its just the solenoids that need cleaning .
Borrow a trailer or a caravan and see what the gearbox does under load.

Think I mentioned that I had the pan replaced and gearbox flushed by LR dealer last week, still had the judder and rasp. Just been down to The JLR Centre in Durban for other reasons they diagnosed the rasp as the EGR valve, and issued me Dr Tranny which I have just administered - it appears to be a magic cure, the gears change more positively and the judder has almost been eliminated after a 10k drive. Never been a believer in snake oil but this - so far so good.

Thanks i will give him a call. Pity i am other side of the country....bit if its something worthwhile i can always make a plan.

My warranty pays up to R20k for gearbox or transfer case...so if he finds things needing fixing it might be worth while

The EGR valve recirculates exhaust gases back into the engine to reduce NoX emissions. Not exactly familiar with the TDV6 but I believe they use stepper motors to operate a valve, these become noisy with age.

A lot of people blank them off, this is what The Centre suggested, however I believe on post 2007 models which are Euro 4 compliant I believe it brings up a fault on the dash so just need to investigate further. Not too expensive to change as I understand if you do not want them blanked off.. this is what they look like..

    Hi longclose

no not on SA models, as they were not fitted with DPF's.

By blanking off the EGR's you will save yourself untold grief. Blanking kits are available from most parts sellers such as British4X4, Dover, LP4A etc.

Blanking off the EGR's and decatting the D3 were the first steps I took after we got the D3.

For directly imported D3 and D4's with DPF, Bell Autoservices in the UK sell the blanking kits with a software patch.

I worked at a factory that assembled Brigs & Stratton lawn mowers, I even had a copy of the test.

That's why I don't do unapproved, non scientifically tested additives.

Yes Longclose that vienna sausage is absolutely magic.
It even works in transfer boxes, and get stuck solenoids in ZF gearboxes t unstuck.

Have to admit, tried it as a last resort and 70 000km later my gearbox is smooth. Its one additive I believe in , and cured a lot of gearboxes since , locally and abroad.

EGR refers, once helped a Jeep wrangler owner , it sounded if the engine was seizing ,we all came to the conclusion it was running bearings or something, but it was a stuck EGR valve

    +1

Koos told me about it 3 years ago and we used it with great effect on the D3 when Sean did the double flush.

That red sausage is to gearboxes, what "the Muti" is to engines, manual gearboxes, TFC' and diffs (without LSD).

Needless to say Sean uses both. Especially when fitting pilot shaft bushes .

I'm very surprised by Peters findings. I have a huge amount of respect in that he's not dismissing his finding to "save" his reputation (which by the way will not be tarnished).

In fact this type of thing makes me more confident in the way Landyworx has, and will treat my vehicle. Big up uncle Peter.

On a similar note if you fell your D3 is too much of a risk to maintain, I suggest you put it up for sale at about R50k so I can buy it.
