    Default 3ph electrical compressor motor

Not really an alternative energy question, but still relating to saving power....

    Some background info first.
We did have a 800kw compressor at work.
With one of our wonderfull power dips, the compressor surged and popped an impeller bearing. Basically the complete insides of the compressor was a mess of very expencive small bits and a ruined bull gear
All parts removed and shipped off to Italy for "repairs".
We think they will just say, REPLACE!!!

    Present.
Thing is, it looks like the current compressor is a bit too big for our usage.
The boss is now thinking of sizing the internals 30% smaller. This will give the compressor lower output without blowing off.

    Problem.
Running the 800kw motor full blast results in a power factor of 0.92.
Running the same motor now at say 70% rated power, will result in an extremely poor power factor, around 0.6 in my estimation.
Replacing the motor will be costly.
    An invertor will cost millions

    Question.
Would a huge capacitor be the answer?
    Dangers of the capacitor?
    Any other options?

Yes a cap would be the solution. But its not as simple as just plugging it in.

Firstly you need 3 caps. One per phase. Then a controller.

Speak to aerocon or energy insight. Its not a diy type of thing. Slightly more specialized.

There are companies specialising in industrial PF correction, e.g. http://www.alphapowersolutions.co.za...correction.htm

Quite interesting to read that you guys are running a 800kw anything without a strongish electrical person on site. That seems a bit scary.
