The smog is covering Bellville !!

Apparently the wind turned over night, thus flaring up the fire again, pushing it the other direction - back over the burnt fields, now dry and ready to BURN !

It's getting bad. The fire pretty much totaled the southern side (Stellenboschberg side) of the valley last night before moving over to Somerset West and Stellenbosch. Still burning madly in the plantations on the Northern side (Pieke side), latest news is that the powers that be are writing off the plantation and will be trying a backburn along the edge of the plantation where it borders Starke-Conde's vineyards.

It's been a very long 36 hours, and looks to be going on for the indefinite future.

Ya, far too early for another one.

Tell Gerald D that there were properly maintained fire breaks and the vegetation was burnt 5 years ago and guess what? It was still totally uncontrollable. The firefighters performed miracles to keep my friends place from burning down.

If the wind there is anything like I have it's pretty much near impossible to stop a fire.

I have had fires on my farm in this kind of wind and there is boggerol you can do but almost sit and watch it go.

Only protect property etc else you enjoy the show

Nic & Spike, our daughter lives near Lanzerac. I am much happier with Jonkershoek's fire management practices than Table Mountain National Park.

Well today was hectic again. Cape Pine have pretty much decided to write off the plantation and try to rather stop the fires on the outskirts and concentrate on protecting property.

Lots of hard work on the ground in the plantations with hand tools and some carefully executed back burns forced the fire uphill and well away from homes. It's still burning but it probably won't trouble the houses. If the wind stays still like it currently is, they can probably avoid their planned course of action, a massive backburn on the western edge of the plantation through a eucalyptus belt to keep it out of the neighbouring vineyards.

Right I'm going to see if I can get an hour or two (hopefully longer if nothing changes)

@GeraldD: I hope your daughter came through ok, I won't wish this fire on anyone.

This is an impressive display of proper firefighting for bush wildfires.

    Fire crossed over Stb mountain

Currently ablaze above paradyskloof and southeast towards Dornier wines and above. These were taken from paradyskloof just below Lieberheim.

Roports state it entered paradyskloof bos (kabouterbos)
