    Default Dinokeng self drive

Hey all, anyone done the Dinokeng self drive that opened in December? Any views, comments, comparisons (to say Pilanesberg) would be welcome please.... Haven't seen any comments about it on the forum (although I did do a quick search!) thanks

Went for a Sunday drive there a couple of weeks ago. The road network was more than I expected will keep you busy for half a day. Only had a couple of hours so did not drive everywhere.

The bush was nice thick so view was not great. Still saw the normal buck etc. None of the big five. I have however seen photos on Dinokeng's facebook page of people seeing the lions etc. on the self drive route.

They are still developing picnic sites so will be a nice day out when they get that up and running

Was a bit disappointing to be honest.... don't let the "4x4" sections fool you... you can do them in 4x2

Didn't see any of the big 5, although the other animals were fairly tame

This sounds great. I've been avoiding Dinokeng based on there not being any self drive routes.

So if you don't do the self drive is there at least a day of pottering around in your own vehicle? and is there somewhere to stop and have a lil padkos lookout point kinda things happy to stay in the car just a nice place to switch the engine off n listen to the silence a bit?

Doing the Dinokeng thing this weekend based on this thread and loving it so far.

We slept in Tamboti bush camp and it is rustic but nice bush vibe.

You can go to places like Mongena and book their game drives, we saw Cheetah (4 took down a warthog in front of us) and Lion. So the game is there.
Lusted for a Landy but the Pajero was sexier and bigger in the right departments, just like my Missus.

So instead of starting a new thread. I will give some feedback on the weekend here so that if people want info on Dinokeng they can find it all in one place.

Dinokeng leaves me confused, I am not sure what to make of it.

It is in transition it is still becoming a reserve. Imagine taking about 57 000 hectares and putting a fence around whatever is in there farms shops main roads etc.

Now the farmers have a choice to take down the internal fences or to keep their area separate still with their goats and cows etc. (Most decided to join the venture)

Then you release game including big 5 in this area.

So it is unique and worth a visit just to see the development.

There is upmarket exclusive lodges and cheap rustic accomodation available. I did not see any of the camping facilities but saw many caravans on the road.

There is a lot of game inside the self drive area and just around the normal roads. We saw all the normal antelope incuding giraffe and buffalo. The cats, elephants and rhino evaded us.

All and all a weekend away for three with food petrol accomodation and game drives to come in under R 4000 including a splurge of a lani dinner at a great lodge I was very happy.

We really missed the Prado for the game viewing and the Sonata knocked and bumped 100's of times.

Yes if you do want a quick getaway without travel absolutely.

It is an hour and a bit from my house in ruimsig so worth it for those quick breaks of just getting into the bush with the added possibility of seeing a lion or elephant.

Do not expect Kruger but what is better there is no crowds.

On Thursday in six hours of game drives we saw two cars.

On Friday 36 cars booked into the self drive area so even on easter weekend you have no crowds.

I would do a day trip first to recce possible places in my price bracket because all the lodges are private and differ in quality.

Thanks! We are also roughly 2 hours out and is always looking for a quick weekend type getaways not too far from home. Especially since we mostly go camping. Cant wait till too dark.

I will onvestigate the camping options and keep it on the short list...

Oh yes the self drive areas will be expanded shortly.

The self drive area cost 220 per car per day but I got a 3 day pass at 130 per day.

Compare that to Rhino Lion park at about R 150 per person for a self drive.

Is there anyone with first hand experience as a farmer in the area.

I would love to know if the locals are positive or are they seeing it as government meddling.

There must be some negative experiences by owners.

The chances of government getting this perfectly right is zero but what I saw was very positive.
