    Default 300tdi Engine problems

    Hi daar julle

Studente Landrover entoesias hierso vir 'n bietjie raad

Ek was einde van Januarie Kosi-bay toe en oppad terug toe my arme ou Disco1 se gasket geblaas.

Die ouens by die garage het my laat weet van die sleeves het seergekry so nou sit ek met die twee opsies:
    1. Boor uit en sit groter pistons insit (wat word dan van fuel consumption?)
    2. Vind 'n nuwe engine om in te sit?

Enige raad of even 'n engine sal baie waardeer word

    Turk
Oversize pistons are still perfect to use
Fuel consumption wont be affected that you will notice
It is better than buying a motor youdont know
Mine are 20 thou oversize at the moment

Don't those engines have sleeve cylinders?

if the Pistons are oversized, does it affect performance and reliability?
(sorry for the stupid questions but studying electronic engineering so mechanical stuff is not my forte)

    Not intensely.

It's probably best to keep all the pistons and sleeves the same size to avoid imbalances in compression and combustion.

Just make sure your Oom uses a good engineering shop. Also use Land Rover head gaskets and he must make sure he understands the gasket thickness requirements.

Some turbo diesels require a specific deck height clearance (distance between top of piston and cylinder head), and this must be matched to the correct head gasket thickness.

Thinking of just talking to a LR specialist as well. Who would you guys recommend in the centurion/pta district?

Oh and another question. Quite a bunch of smoke coming from my D1 when starting as well as on gear shifts - could this be dirty diesel injectors?

Have you guys checked why the sleeves are scratched.....can't be from head gasket.
Are the marks shallow enough to maybe hone and put new rings on the current pistons, obviously subject to check whether pistons to bore clearances are still within spec tolerances. It will be odd if a tdi300 just blown the head gasket and would need more than new gasket (assuming the car was not driven whilst overheating).

At this stage I am really ticked off for myself, as the cause of all this was an aircon belt that cut through the water pipe(running between the top pulley and tensioner) resulting in the motor overheating (again no madman system installed so I didn't know untill it was too late).

So at this stage I'm trying to get the D1 running again and making sure I get that madman system but also want to fix all causes and problems in one go.

I believe that the aircon belt that came off must be of a seized bearing, so will have that looked at as well.

So long story short is that I do not know when what damage occurred. Just know that I need to get it going as I am suffering from serious case of Landroverlessness :-(

    Landyworx in the West Rand.

Stay away from British4x4 and Independent4x4.

I hear there is a new indie somewhere in the Boschkop area.
