Has anyone had any experience, or know of anyone, with experience on the BosOtter Canopies?

I firmly believe "goed koop is duur koop", but they seem to be well built and dont look to bad either. At the price the guys are advertising its a very good alternative to other makes. Its basically half the price of everything else out there.

My apologies for the "dark" photos. I took them on Friday morning before the sun actually made it's appearance. I will retake in the sunlight if you want.

It cost me R25k new end of 2013. I also have some new extra rubbers for the side doors and the seal between the bak and canopy.

Make me a price... you can PM as well if you do not want it on the open forum

Is it mounted on the sides or also on the floor with the plates like the RSi's? looks like on the sides only? 8)

Sides only, but I did not like the brackets Metallian supplied so I used ones that Beekman uses.
The original attachments (which I also still have) hook onto the lip of the side. The ones I used actually folds around the lip of the side presses against the top inside part of the bak side. That way the bracket pushes top part of the bak side against the canopy, as opposed to the original bracket pulling on the lip the fasten the canopy. If that makes sense at all..... But I can't better word this

Jacques why do you want to sell this canopy? Not happy with it? Why do you want to rather go for the RSI?

Nothing wrong with my canopy in terms of function or quality.... maybe just time for a change. And I really like the rounder lines of the RSI.

Some call it a "gatjeuk" for something new.......

Hi all, could you state the fuel consumption on the "higher" metalian" canopy and also when you have a roof top tent fittedThanks

I've thought about doing a steel canopy as I have the machines in-house and the process is as we do on our trailers, but I'm not yet finished with design possibilities on our aluminium canopy.
Heinz, you're only saving 15kg with ally at triple the raw material cost, plus running a white metal shop, plus the terrible fatigue properties of ally plus it's horrible rigidity, plus.... . Those design possibilities of yours must be good to overcome those odds. Personally I find sometimes in design you need to just start again.

Have you considered ultra high tensile sheets. I was seriously considering them for my canopy build, but getting them here in the sticks just wasn't worth the effort. Just a thought.

Consumption with Metalian canopy on the back is about 1 - 1.5 km/l more than with just the toneau cover on. When I still had the Beekman fibreglass on the back, the difference was maybe 0.5 km/l on average heavier than with the cover. I do however think any canopy will affect the consumption due to changed aerodynamics and extra weight. What I can say is: with my higher Metallian on the back and towing my Conqueror, I get the best consumption rates compared to the Beekman or without. In this case it will be alomost 1km/l lighter than with only the cover on

I have used (or tried to use) high tensile steels, but found that you cannot bend these into tight radiuses and need to take care of the grain of the material as well. They're very hard and have massive springback, so bending becomes quite a challenge. I'm not sure one needs such technical material anyway when 3CR12 offers the best balance between strength, formability, weld ability and cost.

But sheet offers design limitations when compared to extrusions. Maybe a lower cost canopy in steel and put more value into the aluminium canopy is the way to go. But I'm happy I'm going down the correct path. I don't have fatique issues as I re-inforce with steel brackets in the critical point which is at the rear top corners.

But you're also right, sometimes a person needs to take a step back and ask some hard questions.

I am very happy with my Metalian canopy on the Rok. The great back up from Heinz is a bonus. What I like is the higher rear door hinge points that prevent you from knocking your head. Some other canopies have a smaller opening above the tailgate. The canopy is also just about 100% dust proof. Many people complement me on the build quality and neat appearance. You get what you pay for.

    Hi Jurgen

A very late reply I know - I have a D/C AMAROK with an RSI canopy fitted. Will be in PE from 9 June onwards if you want to see it.

    Let me know.

I have found threads where these canopies are discussed, but I would like to put them head to head in terms of:

    • Fit and finish on the vehicle
    • No. of holes that needs to be drilled into the vehicle
    • Water and dust sealing
    • Construction strength and load carrying capability
    • longlivity and robustness
    • Can the tailgate be opened with the canopy back door closed?

For me its a tie in the looks area - if the Metalian is the same height as the cab - in some photos it seems higher.

I like that the RSI is made from stainless steel and I like the triple seal of the Metalian.

Who has these canopies fitted and what are your honest opinions?

I would love to be able to see these canopies on a Amarok - anybody in the PE area have either fitted to an Amarok?

IMHO these are the top 2 canopies in SA at the moment and therefore both are excellent.

RSI is slightly more expensive, but that is offset (for me) by the fact that a table in the roof is included. So without accessories fixed front and rear windows and 3 large doors they are pretty much the same price.

Its a difficult decision and therefore I need your input please!

Sorry to revive an old thread ,but I did not see a definite answer to your last question "
    • Can the tailgate be opened with the canopy back door closed?"

I am planning on buying an RSI canopy for my Rok ,but since it's a 2011 model which tailgate cannot lock I want to know if the canopy have some feature that prevents the tailgate to be opened when closed.

The RSI on my Amarok prevent you from opening the rear lid, unless the canopy is opened. I suppose with a lot of force you may be able to open it. There is a sturdy sealing rubber on the RSI rear canopy door which keeps the lid on the bin closed.
