    Default Old mill drift pass

I drove this pass in December it is located between Fouriesburg and Clarence , some info on this pass can be found on the site below.

    http://mountainpassessouthafrica.co....drift-4x4.html

the buildings at the trade post are abandoned.

the interesting part of the pass starts once you pass through a locals (yard) filled with donkeys and the local children operate a toll gate of sorts at this yard, they open the gate and then want sweets in return then they will open the gate on the other side of the yard as well.

the pass does show up on google maps that's how I tracked my progress to see if I am on the right path or not.

I can recommend this pass if you want awesome scenery and want to take the road less travelled especially the part that takes you over the mountain.

    Default Old Mill 4x4

Excellent pics and well done on conquering that in a Jimny! Some of your pics will be used on the relevant page on the our Mountain Passes South Africa website.

From the pass website is states:

...this route is only suitable for the more serious and experienced offroad enthusiast and will require a 4WD vehicle with low range and good ground clearance. Some of the gradients are as steep as 1:4...

How would you rate it though?
Some parts seem quite narrow - not a problem for a Jimny of course!
And how long did the 29km take you?

It is difficult for me to rate it would not know what rating to give it I just drive it.

Some parts are quite narrow but I'm sure a normal size 4x4 will make it through just take your time, don't be in a hurry and enjoy the views

It took me about 4 hours to complete, but there were cows in the way at some points and I stopped for photos and a quick lunch.

Have driven the pass from Rebellie many times, would rate it a 3/4 mostly dew to some washouts of the track and narrowness. It's a single lane track up ,down and passing could prove impossible, needing someone to reverse in not to comfortable space. Driven it with both my TJ and Jk unl. Taken M Manny and his GGX team over it a couple of times.
If my facts /knowledge is correct the pass was used as a border patrol route,
Half way up their is u T/Y junction going up u turn left to the top of the mountain , straight on takes one towards Monantsa pass border post , we drove this the last time out but did not reach Monantsa as we ran out of time and also have to admit that the route gets fussy as u go along so back tracing is part of the drive,On a weekend bucket list plan to go down and drive that part of the pass to the end and see if we could make it all the way to Monantsa pass border post.

    Hi.
I know it's always difficult to rate trails, but maybe you have some previous experience as reference. How in your opinion will a Fortuner with a standard suspension fare on the Old Mill Drift Pass? The Fortuner has proved to be fairly capable in standard form, but ground clearance is always a limiting factor.

The tuna should cope well on the pass , some place u will battle with clearance , and will scrape the belly but if u take a good spotter should manage all the way up and back. This used to be a patrol route and not a 4x4 trail ,disuse has turned it into a trail , I would say your biggest threat is the fact that it could be very overgrown , take a bush knife with to cut back the branches or flinch with the scratches.

Great. Thanks for the advise. I need to study the trail a bit more, but I picked up that you said "up and back". Is that the way to do it, or does the end of the trail exit back onto a road?

This is how I drove the trail as per google maps, it starts just off a main road and ends on the other side of the mountain on a dirt road leading onto a main road

    GPS start S28.634607 E28.370086
GPS middle S28.593894 E28.519351 went left here over the mountains but only after I carried on straight for a bit and then backtracked.
    GPS end S28.577007 E28.473506

Hi guys. I came across the mountain passes website which lead me here. are there any camping sites or accommodation spots near there that anyone knows of or can recommend? and also would this pass be doable in snow?
