Default Fortuner D4D air flow meter

Problem: 2006 Fortuner D4D, 175,000km, RPM > 3000 in 3,4 & 5th gear triggers limp mode. Symptom is reduced power (big eyeballs if it happens whilst overtaking) and orange engine management system light comes on.

Solution-short term: switch off, wait > 5 seconds. Restart; Should reset and continue driving. Keep RPM < 3000 in gears 3, 4 & 5.

Solution-Long term: confirm problem with diagnostic test at Toyota; sometimes cleaning the meter helps, otherwise replace.

    Question:

    1. Any similar experiences?
    2. I ordered one for R1800. Is this the going rate?

Bobs, did you get this sorted?, was it the air flow meter? Mine did it today twice on the way to Blouberg at about 3200rpm in 3rd...did not test in 4 in 5.

    Cheers

I had this problem on Monday towing 'van to Storms River. Knysna Toyota cleaned the meter up - problem solved! Now I know for future reference. I just had the air filter replaced at last service, with no real highway driving since, so wondering if something came off there.

Cleaned the MAF also...problem solved, think it's the first time it was cleaned in 7years and 158k km. R1884 at Toyota for new one (for information).

    Default Limp mode solved.

    Thank you for the responses.

I first had the air flow meter cleaned. This was not successful so bought and had one fitted by Knysna Toyota. Total cost just over R2100, but I have a warranty and the repair is on the Toyota system - for what that's worth.

I wouldn't use hand sanitizer, you need something like Contact Cleaner that leaves absolutely no residue, especially on an air flow sensor. Midas or any spares shop will have it, Spanjaard Lectro Kleen is R90 for a 400ml tin, Holt's also makes a similarly priced version.

Don't use hand sanitiser. Contact cleaner or even brake/carb cleaner will do just fine.
