Weird grinding noise + vibration when coasting in gear!

Hi all

I'm hoping someone will be able to shed some light on this weird noise + vibration that's cropped up in my Landy.

Went to Leeuwenboschfontein this weekend and had lots of fun (will post pics later). We didn't do anything that would have broken the Landy - at least I don't think we did.

However, on the way back to GB, just outside Stellenbosch, the Landy developped a weird grinding + vibration coming from the front axle.

It happens when I'm coasting in 4th or 5th gear, and the revs are between 2000-1500. It's kind of a low grinding noise with some barely-noticeable vibrations, and it does not happen in neutral or gears 1-3, and (touching wood & praying it's not), seems to be coming from the front diff!

The narrow rev band and specific gears that this occurs makes me think that it's something that's loose & resonating, but I can't me certain. I had a quick look under the Landy, and nothing seems to be out of place/broken, not even leaking oil.

Anyone had this problem or know of this and can shed some light for me?

Did Leeuwenboschfontein a year ago great trail.
Had to tow a Defender back to base with my Disco - couple of hairy curves and climbs.
Had a noise emanting from the front of his Defender. He drove home aftewr removing front prop shaft - if I rember correctly the problem was in front diff - a loose circlip was part of the story .
