Default tyre size advice for hilux and boat

I need some tyre advice. I will be needing four new tyres soon on a Hilux 2x4 D4D 3.0. Currently have 255/70/15 Dueler D840s on there. Bakkie is mostly used on tar and then often to launch a boat on slipways. This is where some grip would be nice.

What is the best tyre choice at the moment for my application?

    I can get Cooper AT3s for R2188 in 245/75/15 and also for R2850 in 255/70/15. Dueler D897s I can get for R1850 in 255/70. Yoko Geo12 for R2188 in 255/70

It seems the 245/75s are the less expensive size

If I change size to 245/75 can I keep my 255/70 spare wheel?

I've seen many guys change to 31x10.5R15. BF Goodrich T/A is a good tyre.

You would like to add the Pirelli Scorpions to your list.

The ATRs have great reviews on this site. Great dry & wet TAR grip with approx 80 000km life.

The HT version, the STR, appears to have never been used by a forum member, so, no comment on them...

I would go with those Cooper AT/3's. Following the recent reviews on these tyres coupled with the 80 000 km warranty on them they'll be the way to go for me.

RogueFrontier, I was looking hard for the Scorpions but they only come in 255/75R15 which is a 3.5% increase in diameter to my current tyres. That means I will probably have to replace spare wheel as well?

Sniper, the AT3 do come highly recommended and to be honest I almost bought them yesterday. I came across some reviews claiming they puncture all the time and now I am not too sure!! I suppose for 80% tar traveling that won't matter much to me.

Rassie, is the BFs not known to not handle wet too well?

    Any more comments?

It seems that as long as the tyre diameters differs by only 1-2% they can be used on the drivetrain. So 245/70R15 will likely be my new size.

25,000kms now and not one puncture.

The factory GY Wranglers were horrible in comparison. I used to have a puncture every month.

AT3 also better in the wet and mud.

Option 1 - sell spare on gumtree Many ppl do and you will still get good money for it towards a new spare.

Option 2 - Use spare like a space sever - only in emergency. Remember not to use diff-lock.

This guy just quoted me R1100 on Firestone Destination AT 245/75/R15 and he says he has them in 255/70R15 for almost the same price. Is this too good to be true?
