Man, sometimes the proper stupid button hits way too close to home....
The fattie has been parked in the garage for a sizeable amount of time, business is bad, profits are down and the fuel price keeps swinging far north of my affordability scale, so she sits, mostly almost..
Last of last thursday just before the Easter break I suffer a breakdown in the Mrs Beemer somewhere close to the R21 Nelmapius turnoff, vehicle shaking quite violently with a warning sign on the screen to get to a dealer as urgently as possible, which I duly did, slowly, where 5 days later I was reamed the small sum of R5k for replacing 4 sparkplugs.. Hell at that pricepoint the very least I would expect apart for the R69 I paid for the car to be cleaned expertly was a tub of vaseline so the 'slide' would be a little more bearable, but, alas, BMW like it rough it seems...
Anyway, that's a story for another day..
So back to the fattie - SWAMBO, Max Verstaffie and my 19 year old eldest come fetch me at BMW Centurion in the fattie.. SWAMBO there because the victim happens to be her vehicle, which she loves, and the eldest since SWAMBO refuses to drive the fattie, and Max because he is always up for a trip on the backseat, farting quietly to his blissful delight..
I was done with driving for the day, so hopped into the fatties passenger seat and told threequarterpint to get us home...
"Dad", he says, "the fattie is driving like sh1t, she has no get up and go.."
No I tell him, don't push her, you need to go past the first click on the accelerator before she wakes up.. He looks at me as-if I have a 2nd hole in my arse, which I accept given he is a teenager and I know nothing...
Seems he was right after-all, today I had to go back to Tshwane to deliver an item that could only fit in the fattie, gutless-gertie would have sufficed but it was raining and she has no canopy so the fattie it was..
She was positively asmatic, her get up and go had gotten up and left sometime back, the ponies had left the paddock and ran astray north of the Limpopo never to be seen again.. She drove like cr@p, her gearbox wasn't gearboxing properly, at one stage on a fairly long uphill I was being pushed out of the fast lane by a Suzuki Swift, so I gave it horns and all that happened was the engine revved to 5K and then stayed there, gearbox would not shift up, could not get her to go past 120, so I flipped the gearbox disting switch on the steering which notched her into another ratio, and slowed her down more, got to the slow lane and ashamedly apologized to the Swift for holding her up...
Now the brain kicks into total WTF mode, is it gearbox, is it engine, is it the supercharger snout breaking off - man don't be a cock, if that thing broke off you would have a hole in the bonnet... Panic sets in.. Cashflow sets out...
Stopped at a ultracity, pop the bonnet and the professional mechanic in me confirms that in fact, there is an engine in there, and it seems to be engining rather poorly despite still idling smooth as V8 silk, so closed the bonnet and drove home seriously miffed at the prospect of handing her over to JLR somewhere while buying my own jar or Land Rover approved vaseline...
Then I remembered that I owned one of those Icarsoft diagnostic things, plugged her in and ran the diagnostics, 1st test is the engine, so ran that test and a Mass airflow sensor fault was diagnosed on bank B, which is the other side of bank A... Cleared the fault successfully with engine off but on running again the fault reappeared, which is a good thing because at least something is really wrong, well of course it is, but you know what I mean, its easier to have something to point to than looking at a block of complex aluminium trying to find where to put the stethoscope..
Since bank A & bank B MAF's are the same, the simplest thing to do was to swop the left out for the right and vice versa, run the test again and see if the fault jumps banks.. so I did that.. the fault stayed put on bank B..
Well that's a ball-ache I thought..
So then back to diagnostics and I run some live data, bank A airflow is measuring properly increasing as you rev the fattie, bank B is sitting fixed at about 1.2 million kg of air despite how hard you do or don't pin her..
And then I remembered.. Around 3 weeks back I checked the LHS airfilter to see if they both would need changing as it's been a while since last replaced.. I wonder...
Wonder I did... Removed the LHS airfilter housing only to find that when I had closed her up the three odd weeks back, I had inadvertently got the MAF cable which is clipped on the side of the housing caught between the two housing halves, and promptly severed two of the 3 or 4 wires which are there..
A bit of a jointing exercise, some new wire, some proper solder, some proper heatshrink insulation, some proper closing of the affair and safe to say the fatties ponies have come back home to rest where they should, thank goodness... I'll be placing my LR approved unused 250ml vaseline tub in the 'what offers' thread shortly...
Who would have thought that failure pointing to such a small component that looks like one of granny's pins with the plastic blob on the head would cause so much mis-balance from RPM to power to gearbox control to vaseline...
Thank the good Lord above that I had that Icarsoft thing, otherwise I'd probably be busy removing the gearbox around now..

Our well maintained South African roads took out one of the Hiflys that I bought the Range Rover with. Was hoping to get another couple of months out of them. But such is life.

Up from the 275/40/20 its a nice increase in sidewall
Also needed to lift it 50mm and still have some slight rub at the back wheels when cornering and accelarating hard.

The timing chain issues were seeming resolved around MY2012, so it 'should' not be that on your 2015..
What's your mileage, have you checked the supercharger pulley connector thing for rotational play, I am led to believe that excess play from the 'coupler' leads to bad noises..

Yeah, that seems to be the concensus, it's in for the annual service, so they're checking everything out.
Just gone over 114,000km.
I heard it for the first time tomorrow after a somewhat 'spirited' drive on the way to a trail.
Other owners have also experienced a 'ticking' sound without any issues, seemingly switching to a better oil than Castrol solves this. We're going with Motul, since we can't find Liqui Moly.

On the assumption that you might not have, if not, get yourself registered with Liqui Moly SA and order the oil online, anything above R600 and delivery is free, just replaced the 10L of 5W20 in my fattie 2 days back after an extended procrastination.. Took them all of 1 day to process the order and get the oil to me, granted, we are not far apart, but still...

I have heard of the hydraulic tensioners failing partially or even totally so dont discount that possibility. If the troubleshooting does point to that, it's not a huge job to remove the lower timing chain cover to assess and replace if need be. No need to disturb the top end of the engine which would be necessary if the chains need replacing.
I would not be surprised if JLR recommends replacing all timing chain components but that is not normally necessary and is not cheap.

yep, but the 0w20 superseded the 5w20: the 0 will spread faster on cold startup, therefore mitigating cold startup wear & tear.
There is a special LM oil for LR that the Yanks use: https://www.liqui-moly.com/en/us/spe...0-p004426.html
but of course, we don't get that in ZA.

I think the cold startup thing between 0W and 5W is regarding really cold climates, not so much us, but I did read that the 0W helps with lowering fuel consumption on cold startup, and personally I think that's just not right, I mean, asking a thirsty 5L supercharged V8 to run a little thinner on the Fat is just not British old chap....
... but I might just consider my options on the next change
