I know in Wellington there is a guy that only work with land rovers, don't want to mention the name don't know if it is against the t's&c's. They also have a branch in Brackenfell now maybe they have one lying around.

Don't know if it has been mentioned, but apart from fitting a new cam belt, also fit a new water pump ... the cam belt drives the water pump .... mine ceased, we ended up just buying another engine; luckily not too expensive and driving again after a week.

Sterkte with the conversion, once it's done it is only a pleasure

Late as usual, but I have 5 cents to add....
Yes, I have both - the VVT and non VVT monsters

Haven't gotten down to Krapping with the VVT (5 speed), but have replaced 3 flex plates on my non VVT defender....something went wrong with the TH350 adapter plate hence the eating of flex plates...

Running a Gotech controller...big mistake, but thats how I got it...(also came with a LH front diff to suit the NP234 TC)

Where I'm going with this.....I decided to go for the standard Lexus 4 speed auto box to get away from the TH350 and adapter problems, but felt sick about having to buy a gearbox controller (damn GoTech wants to sell me a new ECU as well cos my "old" version wont talk to the gearbox unit)

I managed to bum a Lexus 4 speed auto box but it came without the bell housing, so I krapped around in my store and found a Mitsi 4 speed auto (AW 3040) that has the same bolt pattern as the Lexus (AW3040 LE).
The Mitsi transfer case is also LH to the front prop which suits me fine.
so, maybe the Mitsi box (which is way stronger) can be used instead of bleeding out for a gearbox controller.

I just need to find a Lexus 4 speed bell housing.........

Argued my way around not having a handbrake on my auto S2 88....

Put it in "park" and told them to test my "handbrake".....walked out with my roadworthy cert.

This has caught my attention but is the rear output on the TC in the centre?

On a Series, a Defender ,the RRC and on a Disco 1 & 2 the offset is to the right.
On a P38 I think to the center rear.

Yes I meant on the mistsubishi TC is the output to the rear diff in the centre or also to the right as I do not want to swop out the diff as that requires a lot of extra work

I finally found some photos of the Mitsubishi TC case and it isn't going to work for me and some of the guys say that the low range isn't that low as the TC from my disco so I think I will stick with the Disco TC and lexus motor.

many guys screw up getting a transfer case that does not output at the same side as the land rover pumpkins
LR have both pumpkins offset to RHS
most Jap TC have rear centre and front left or right
this will cause major headaches for props
    stick to LR TC

    Most Jap are center rear.

The only ones that are/weren't were old SFA Hilux, old FJ60 and earlier LC, and Nissan Safari and Super Safari (160 Mq/MK Patrol).

    Take Landyluvver's advice.

The Mitsi TC is center rear, left front ( electronic - no nasty sticky things with linkages).........but the box is way stronger than the Lexus and doesnt need a controller

Except it has a horrible 1.9:1 low range..

Doesn't the NP231 work on the Lexus box as well? Can also be flipped, and has a bunch of options if you're willing to import from the states..

Don't know about that 1.9:1 low range....the flex plate doesn't make it to the corner, so I have never tried the low range, besides, my Lexus Defender's just for show....If you wanna play in the dune's I'll see you there with my 4x4 tractor

I've got a left hand front diff so the NP234 works fine for me.....

If the box fits and is to the wrong side you could rotate the diff hosing if you are keen on making lots of work for yourself..

    Hi everyone

I have tracked down a motor and gearbox and bought it in the end. All it needs is the ecus and aircon pumps other than that it is complete and in good condition. I will start going through everything tomorrow and clean the engine nice and properly and also refurb the starter while it is all nice and open. Must say I'm very excited as I think this is going to be a very nice project.
