    Default I lost my photos

Hi, can anybody please help!! We've been on a recent trip to Botswana and took a lot of photos. Unfortunately I accidentally deleted some of the photos on my Nikon D90 camera before transferring it to my computer. Does anybody know whether it can be recovered and how?

Just deleting ? Yes. They can be recovered, or partially recovered - provided no photos were taken since they were deleted. You will need a bootable Linux distribution and a Linux tool called photorec. I would help, but I am in the UK at the moment. Please PM me if more detaila are needed.

Thanks for the info, I appreciate! Unfortunately I did take photos afterwards. Seems I've lost my case!

Might still be able to recover at least some of them. Photos are only lost if new photos got saved on the same "space" where the old photos were. Where are you based?

Sorry to hear that. In that case, I think they will probably be gone. It might be an idea to try in any case - you might get one or two photos back in any case. However, under the circumstances, the best you can probably hope for is a partial recovey.

Oh - I was wrong. Photorec has a windows release as well. Details here http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec

    Good luck.

If it is a Lexar card then Nikon might be able to assist you with it.

Not necessary. The newer cards spread writes over the whole card so as not to over use some memory cells and under use others, so still try. maybe you can get some back.

SandisK also shipped a recovery program on the CF cards I bought about 2 years ago. This also worked well.

Yip - also used this before and works well.

There's of course a lesson hear, not to delete your photos before you download them. Not only because of the obvious reason as what happened in this case, but sometimes an image on your small LCD screen on your camera does not look all too well, so you delete it. DONT! Download ALL your images to you HDD first and view on a larger screen before you delete them - sometimes a photo that did not look well may just surprise you when you see the "bigger picture".

    DAM - Digital Asset Management

We always take the notebook with on the long trips.

Photos get downloaded onto the notebook.

Then gets backed up onto an external hard drive.

Only then do I clean the cards for tomorrows shoot.

At home it all gets backed up onto a desktop, and then again onto a larger external hard drive.

sounds good .... still managed to loose two months worth of photos (fortunately only 2 local trips) ....

HOPE you get those pics back

Plenty of software available from free (Recuva) to commercial (GetDataBack FAT) to mention two.

If you just deleted try Recuva first.

If you deleted photos from a full disk and then took more photos and filled the disk again they are probably gone, however if you deleted from a partially full disk and took more photos that only took up the previously unused space then you have an excellent chance of recovering them. The sandisk program is easy to use and should do the job.

    Default Recovery programs

There are various recovery programs for Jpeg purposes that can be downloaded for free from the net for example PCRECOVERY etc just type this in and search on google then transfer the memory card to the PC after installing the software and go through the motions just read the instructions in most cases they are quite straight forward some programs allow you to recover straight to the memory card others to a different disk.

Pretty sure you will recover most if not all

If you're nervous to have a go yourself with the mentioned software, I'd be happy to give it a go. I'm in Centurion.
Important things to do if you want to try yourself:
    1) Write protect the memory card, if you can.
    2) using the software, first step is to make an image copy of the card to a file on your hard drive. Then try and recover from the copy, not the card. In other words, you cannot worsen the problem by making changes on the card.

    +1 on the Sandisk software.
    Make it happen!
