    Default Frustrated Defender Buyer

I have been looking to buy a 110 Defender Td5 for some while now. I can't seem to find the right one. I don't have the biggest of budgets. I can't spend more than R100k on a defender.

Is it unrealistic to think that I will find a good, reliable Defender?

The price of the defender are so incredibly high. It's ridiculous.

If any of you know of a good Defender for sale, pop me a message.

I've had excellent help from two guys on the forum @Dirk & @JediNAfrica. They are champs. I say: "Give that man a Bells"

    Yours,

    Frustrated Landy Lover

You are looking for 'scaricity' Shaun, I think it is unrealistic to expect a 110 TD5 in good reliable condition for 100k. Their prices are rediculous, and what's more, they are going to get even more rediculous, but that's ok with us that are already in the Landy. Maybe up your buks and find something that you'll realy love and want to keep forever.

Maybe take a look at a 300tdi defender for that price range, you more likely to find a gem. They are reliable if they have been looked after.

Speak to hgbosch for advise and what to look for.

The best is to buy a 110 TDi and built it up to your spec.

    SNAP iLandy.

The 300TDi can be bought for around R65k and another R35k of extras will give you a VERY nice Defender.

I had exactly the same problem

    bought a Pajero

    Stranger runs and hides
Lusted for a Landy but the Pajero was sexier and bigger in the right departments, just like my Missus.

    Other alternative:

Find a 110V8 County. Comes with galvanised chassis, LT85 box and Salisbury rear axle. Standard price is R40k-R45k.

Sell the old V8 engine to silly people who play with things that make noise but don't provide action. Get R5k back.

Get the M&D engineering Isuzu engine conversion kit.

    Product : Kits available for land Rover 90/110/130 V8 manual models Part Number : Kit 208 Description : Isuzu 4JB1 / 4JG2 (2.8NA & 3.1T)
    Price : 435 + vat

Buy a low kilo Isuzu 4JG2T 3.1L Turbo diesel. R15k at most Jap importers.

Drive away into the sunset for under R70k.

Also agree, rather look for a TDI300.
A TD5 for R100K will cost you a lot of bucks to get into good shape.
And if not looked after it will soon become a gremlin and ruin your landy experience!

Sold my 2006 TD5 110 for R185K privately and LR N1 city said the would have offered me more.

The vehicle was extremely neat and just over 100000kms on.
They said low km neat defender's prices are gonna skyrocket soon.
The have lists of people looking for well maintained Defenders, which is nearly impossible to find.

Phone Stephen Proudfoot - 0826554919. He is normally quite good at sourcing Landies and has a countrywide network. Your budget is quite low though. I agree with serielr: you will be better served with an older TDi - they are a little sluggish but great vehicles none-the-less and very reliable. Don't test drive a Td5 though cause then you will not want the TDi :-) Good luck!

"TDi - they are a little sluggish but great vehicles none-the-less and very reliable."

Only sluggish with a standard turbo, IC and fuel pump setting.

Talk to HGBOSCH for tweaks. You can get 100kW out of that engine, no worries.

some Ozzies have pushed theirs to 185 bhp (138kW). Still running reliably.

Thanks for all the responses... Problem is...I've driven the Td5...so Tdi is, like you said, a bit sluggish. What would you guy say I need to spend extra? I am quite keen on buying a Td5. Not so keen to buy and change the engine etc etc.

But...in saying that.. I am open for ideas. I will phone Stephan and hear what he says.

    Patience is virtue I assume

I think you should start looking at about R150 000.00, but speak to Stephen. He's been doing this for many years.

Patience is a virtue but blind ignorance is a sin.

"A TD5 for R100K will cost you a lot of bucks to get into good shape."

Those cylinder heads have issues. So do the ECUs and the injector harness.

A rebuild of one of those engines will see R60k disappear in a flash.

    But it's your money.
