What is your guys opinion regarding a hard-top like this one? Should I rather not settle for such a vehicle?

I just saw this in DTox's footer - get in touch. Those 2.8's are great motors.

aahh.. I know. I have decided against those motors due to the extremely high fuel consumption. Good motors though.

Defender prices are more condition/desirability dependent, you can throw the book out the window on good, looked after vehicles, and mileage is not that big an issue.

At that price point, you're safer looking at Tdi's as mentioned, or 2.8's.

Have you considered the luxury version?
Same drivetrain but a bit more power
    Choice of manual or auto
ABS, traction control and other clever electronics to help you offroad
Comfy seats and good AC and all the bells and whistles. Electric eveything.

All for half the price. Bargain of the century

    Gents,

It seems you guys are right. It will be the safest bet looking at a Tdi. I don't want to burn my fingers by buying a cheaper Td5 and start hating Land Rover.

Let me know if you know of any 110 Tdi's for sale.

Theo, I am still speaking to your friend,

Yep, I'm selling mine, as I dont have time to get to all of them, I lend the D90 and trailer to a potentional buyer, they will be back next weeks, sounds like they will be taking it... good deal IMHO ...

the 2.8 is a awsome car and I never had issues with it, only a faulty viscous (okay, so almost never)

nope, not realy, tahts why I thought its a good deal for both.. trailer is worth at least 50K ... so a D90 for R55 is for free, as she had 120k km on when they left with the car, I'm 2nd owner of both ..

Disco 2 Td5 is an awesome piece of kit.

Mine was the 'bottom of the range' coil springs, cloth seats, but was facelift model, with CDL + the electronic stuff. I think it was designated ES

I don't like leather seats at all, so that was great, and I was loaded plenty of times, with no ill-effects.

I was very sad when my time in SA came to an end, and it was just not economically viable, with our punitive import taxes, to bring it back to Zim. Bided my time, and waited for the right vehicle, which I ended up with. However, the cost of mine three years ago, is significantly more than you are looking to spend, and even with our economic downturn here, and some 50 000km on the clock, it has only lost the value of a set of new tyres.....

As Puma 130 said, just keep looking, the right one will come your way.

I share your frustration, big time!
I owned a 90 pick up TDi from 2008 to 2011, had to sell it because I was going overseas. Struggled to sell it and sold it for next to nothing, compared to what they go for now...
Been back since 2013 and trying to save some cash to buy one again, but if the prices go the Toyota way, I might just settle on a Disco 2

I'd be curious to know what they really go for though, since all we see online is the asking price
