Default Sudan 2014 and again in 2015

    Hi guys,

well, we spent about 6 weeks in Sudan (North) this year, travelled to a lot of places in a Discovery and an HJ61, we had desert fun, oases, temples, pyramids and went diving in the Red Sea. What a lovely country, I have put together a few impressions for you. We were so impressed we will go back at the end of this year and stay for another 3 months. If anyone is interested, you can join us. Itīs no problem to rent 4x4s there and go bush! Camping in the desert is absolutely great! Just contact us for info on the next trip in Feb/March 2015!

    Hereīs just a little selection:

Great selection of pics mate. I hear it is also a lovely country with very friendly people.
BTW: I'm going to be traveling up North in December so any info on visa application for Sudan would be appreciated. Do they supply at the border, or Embassy in Nairobi etc or would it be better to apply before leaving SA.
    Thx

Thanks for the report and the great photographs. We also plan to visit Sudan next year, as part of a self-drive trip from SA. Have done most of our research. Could I trouble you to provide more detail on the Red Sea portion of the trip?

    Hi guys,

well...with visas I am not sure, on our first trip through Africa we applied for them in Cairo, you canīt get them at the border. Coming from South there may be a problem getting them in Ethiopia, so I have heard. I would try Kenya. Now, South Africa would maybe be the best for application, but once you have the visa you must enter the country within 1 month. That makes the trip till Sudan very sshort. I would then go for Nairobi. I would try and contact the embassy there...but hey, you guys know, this is Africa...can you rely on info from a few thousand km away?

The Red Sea...what a great place! Ok, once you get to Sudan, you need to get to Khartoum first to apply for travel permits, they are free, but allow you to turn off the main route from the Ethiopian border through Khartoum to the North. On police checkpoints they will wanna see it and keep a copy of it (have plenty of copies!!!)

Ok, again...the Red Sea...very nice. Suakin, the ruin town made out of corals is impressive. Diving is even more impressive, there are not many tourists (nearly none at all), so diving is relaxed. There are wrecks, even Landrovers and leftoveres of Jacques Cousteauīs experiments under water. We loved the diving there. If you need to know more, ask...we will be going down there in Decembere to take over and run the dive center. It is the only one where you can dive from land (I mean, going out by a small boat for a day and come back) - all others are liveaboard companies. So, take the Sudan Red Sea Resort into consideration. We will have rebuilt the dive center and have some European management.

Just a little video showing what can go wrong, driving too slow! But luckily having a few heavy Sudanese at hand! We loved it!!! (afterwards!)

Some great photos that brought back great memories from our Africa overland trip back in 2006. People in Sudan were so friendly and you dont come across many other travellers or tourists.
