    Default Best Cooler Box

    Greetings All!

Please advise... I'm looking to purchase a medium size thick-walled cooler box that will fit comfortably into my Jimny (30-40 litre capacity) ... I'm NOT looking for a battery-operated/plug-socket type cooler, I'm looking for something that that will keep ice for around 6-7 days.
(I realize that the less often it is opened, the longer the ice will last).

My trips between re-fuels/re-stocking foodstuffs/fuel etc. are never more than 5-7 days anyway.

In your opinion, what brand of cooler box should I be considering?
Are those blue "Ice Kool" cooler boxes worth considering (and worth the price-tag)?

Thanks guys, your feedback will be appreciated

    Hi Louisb

The chilli chest from outdoor warehouse is amazing, I bought the Larger size of the 2 options. The ice lasted 5-6 days, keeping everything nice and cold.

    Hope this helps

I agree that these thermo-electric coolers are a waste of time, but is there a reason why you do not want to consider a proper fridge ?

I have a 55L glass fibre cooler box that is brilliant, but it has the same outside dimensions as a 52L National Luna Weekender.

The ice kool cooler boxes, marketed by eva kool are great. Bought one about 2 years back (85L) and bavent looked back since. Work very well if tou folow the instructions. Ie cool the box before you go on your trip and limit free air space. The best part for me is spares are available. Broke a latch a few weeks back contacted the agents and a new latch ws couriered to me the following day. In my mind definitely worth it. A little pricey but they are tough as nails.

    +1 for Romer.

    1. The inside and exterior sides are quite square rather than sloped so the box packs well and contents pack well in the box.
    2. It has excellent insulation properties - there is a thread on this forum in which Tony Weaver does a test of ice keeping capability
    3. It has built in tie down loops that allow the box to be tied down without preventing you from opening the box
    4. It has a door seal like a fridge
    5. It has pretty much unbreakable door catches (and I am sure spares would be available)
    6. It has a full-length hinge which is an integral part of the body and lid
    7. You really can use it as a personnel step or a ramp for your Landrover
    8. It has a proper drain plug to drain out water from thawed ice
    9. It is made in RSA

The only thing that could improve it would be a maybe 3 or 4 fridge baskets of a suitable size. I am on the lookout for these.

You can get it at Agrimark outlets - 40 litre, 60 litre and bigger I think - check Romer or Agrimark's web sites.

I have a 45l Coleman that also does a good job. Ice lasted 3 days in mine. Upside is that it has a drain on it that you can drain any meltwater out.

Just last week I insulated the lid with some expanding "foam in a can" for R55.00.

Next up for the foam injection is the 20 year old Addis coller box.

Chilly Chest from ODW. Keeps ice for up to 10 days if kept in the shade and managed properly.

No, but the National Luna can keep itself cold without the need for ice

We do a couple of long trips to very isolated places every year and getting hold of ice was a pain in the but. Making ice was a bit of a problem at the start of trips as the freezer was then still full. So, now we have a freezer and a fridge.

Thanks Andre. These are the "flat" cooler boxes right.? Think they designed them to be able to fit under a chair or something like that.

Techno ice cooler boxes from outdoor warehouse are an expensive but excellent option to consider.
