Default Was Lead Crystal a Scam ?

    Hi Forum Members

I was thinking about this earlier today, were Lead Crystal batteries a scam?

Been browsing for batteries recently and you hardly see these batteries for sale anymore?
They were supposed to be the next big thing better that Gel and AGM
longer life cycles, deeper discharge faster charging etc etc... on paper they were all good.

They were all the hype between 2014-2017 (3 years) and seemed to have faded away.
(coincidentally 2-3 years was the point that they failed for a number of users)

i'd like to rest my thoughts on this, which is why i'm wondering if this was just a scam?

I am still using two 150AH LC batteries, +3 and +4 years old respectively. I did have one die on me within the first two months, and sadly during our tour to Kgalagadi in 2015.

The one in the back of my Hilux got warm and bulged early last year, just our of warrantee. I connected my trusty 220V 15A Victron charger, selected recondition, left a few days on charge and it is performing like new, very strange .

Edit: my experience is they hate heat and vibration.

    I have 3 Lead Crystal 105AH.

One is 6 years old, down to 80% capacity/performance, and I abused it. One is 5 years old, probably 95% capacity/performance, took better care of this one.
One is new, bought last month.

They served me well over the years.

I have 2 x 100a/h LC batteries in the back of my d/c for last 4 years. Have done over 50,000km of trips with them over the worst roads imaginable. They are still perfect. I have 4 friends with similar setup. One has 2 x 150 a/h LC batteries in his cruiser m/ home. They are really working hard. None of us have problems. Main thing, keep them out of the engine bay and they will last in my opinion. I would much rather use them over any other battery.

    10yrs is impressive.

AGM would also be lower maintenence due to no distilled water top-ups needed, when not in use just keep them trickle charged and ideally stored in dry cool conditions?

Any tips you can please share with us on good battery practise after your years of experience with these batteries?

I have 3 x 120AHr in the camper - no issues with vibrations etc after about 3 or 4 years. The 2 x 100AHr in my old Defender (sold) are still going strong. They must be about 8 years old.

But, we also used them at work for high sites, and we had a few failures. Many are still going strong after 8 years (same age as the one in the Defender). Quality control in the factory must have been an issue - Deltec apparently had to replace quite a few batteries under guarantee which some say is the reason why they stopped importing them.

Mine is 8 years old and still working 100%.
Regularly tested on the Nossob corrugations without problems.
I would buy again except for the much higher price now.

Regarding vibration - I had my 150AH LC strapped onto the wheel arch of the Land Cruiser 79 I had at the time touring Kgalagadi when the battery failed.

I wonder if I strapped it too tightly, causing excessive force both ends??

Since then I have used wood on top and high density foam rubber below and on top of the battery. Both are still strapped in this way, 1 in my caravan and 1 against the cab in the rear of my Hilux.

I have had my Deltec LC 100 Ahr in the back of my Cruiser since beginning 2013 and have done Tanzania (once) and Zambia, Zimbabwe, Kgalagadi a couple of times with some really poor roads. Performance probably not 100% anymore but still pulls the National Luna 65l witout any problems. Sometimes use a 100 Watt solar panel to help when stationary.

Scam, dunno bout that. Devious marketing, unrealistic claims, smoke and mirrors, to me, for sure, without a doubt.

Why has no other major battery manufacturer copied or licensed this technology. It’s a multi-billion dollar industry.

The reported failures of these batteries is way out of proportion to their numbers in use. Off the top of my head, something like 1 in 10 for LC vs 1 in 100 or 1000 for conventional batteries.

And to back them up their guarantee reads like the Magna Carta.

And if you do the math, they are actually more expensive per round trip charge than a decent normal battery.

Cool Re: Was Lead Crystal a Scam ?

Lead crystal is still alive , although I think Lithiumion overtook it when it comes to cycles and physical size for the capacity.
Communica in Pta and MAL distributers in PE, are two places I know of that has some lead xtal batteries in their arsenal.

Wow that table is a total load of garbage

Unbelievable how one can used selected data points to play towards a certain agenda.

Even a layman like myself can disprove most of the points on that table with 5min of searching on Wikipedia.

Well what do you expect to get from the Lead crystal battery website?

The only problem I know of with LC Batteries is the charging regime. You need to have a properly staged system that gives a final top-up at 14.7 volts, otherwise they do not charge fully and this can cause damage in the longer term. For this you need an "intellegent" alternator (fitted on most new engines) or a "fit-for-purpose" DC charger. I have had a 90AH LC in the the new National Luna box (with DC board in front) for 2 years with long trips to Namibia and Botswana (total 5 months) and absolutely no problems. Have run it down to 12v (about 50% discharge) many times and it recharges to 14+ volts with no issues using a CTEK D250S (also linked to PV panel). The system was designed and made by Jacque at BushPower and has (touch wood) operated perfectly.Even a "deep-cycle" Gel battery should not discharge more than 10-15% repeatedly, so for us the question is how much power you can actually get out of battery, not its AH rating.
