Jola, I stopped putting prices on the forum because they change with each shipment.

Please email me at 'info at repcom.co.za' and I will forward the price list on to you.

    Some questions if I may.

Typical 4x4 set up, fridge, a few lights, charging headlight battery's and so on.

    Should you:

Charge the battery's without the load or is it OK to run your equipment while the charger is connected.

The question arises out of places like KTP where you have limited power time. ideally I would switch off the load or switch to 220 and recharge overnight but some items only work off 12 V.
Lusted for a Landy but the Pajero was sexier and bigger in the right departments, just like my Missus.

Preferably without the load (a fridge draws quite a load) but the BX-2 should cope well enough. The BX-1 is a bit light for this.

The overall charge rate would be a mean 7A minus whatever the load consumption is.

I have a BX1 that I've had for about 5 years that died last week. Any ideas on where I could have it repaired? Could it be a fuse?

It could be a fuse, but unlikely to only be the fuse. Have you had bad weather lately - lightning? Am electrical surge or lightning could blow the fuse but it may also have blown something else deeper into the electronic circuitry.

With courier and repair costs being not that much lower than a replacement charger, you might be better off replacing it with the newer BX-1 Pro model.

My BX-1 has packed up on me recently as well. It had been used to keep my and my EX's race car batteries from dying in between races. It won't allow me to select the charge mode although the red power LED is on.
I have the wiring with in-line fuse fitted to all of my cars so wouldn't like to have to buy three extra set-ups again because plugs are different if I go with another make when replacing the charger.
What will the cost be to replace the BX-1 as I like the maintenance feature on the chargers.

Paul - it's more likely that the microswitch inside the charger is the problem. If you can open the charger you could spray it with electrical cleaner and it will work much better again.

Paul, you can definitely do as Phuma suggested. We have Mode switches for the BX-1 & BX-2 in stock as well, but 90% of the time a good douse with Contact Cleaner should sort you out.

Be careful when you open the unit (you can modify an Allen key for that if you do not have the correct triangular tool) because the little red mode button loves jumping out into oblivion.

Failing that, we do have stock of BX-1 Pro, but yours appears to be the older BX-1 or BX-1(M) model.

Thanks for the advice Phuma and Family Dog. Yes it is the older BX-1.
Luckily I have a good selection of the "odd" bits necessary to open most of the modern appliances that are designed to be disposable. I'll open it up and give it a good clean with contact cleaner which I'm using to clean all the plugs on my project SJ 410 wiring looms.
I'll give feedback on the results of giving it a "bath".

I was once the proud owner of a Benton BX1 charger. It gave me amazingly good service over the past 5 years.

However I am in the market for a proper charger again by unhappy circumstances.

This morning when I looked to my trusty charger to condition the car batteries again...
It along with the brand new motorbike battery and my 12v LED light and my multimeter has dissapeared. It turns out a "suspect" came into my most sacred garage and helped himself to my stuff when I topped up the dogs water before leaving home.

    Hi Eric,

When I am out of the country for long periods, I put my deep cycle battery on the BX2 to.keep charged. When I was at home recently, I noticed that the charger only had the orange power light on. I disconnected one of the clamps and reconnected the clamp.and then the 12V and the 3 red charging status leds came on and went off again after a few seconds. I tried my other BX2 and it did the same thing. Is this normal or is there an issue with the battery?

Life is a journey, not a race. Enjoy it!
