Just connected the BX2 to it earlyer and nothing happend so probably under 8V, forced some amps in to it with supply mode for 10 minuts or so and then switched to regular charging, the empty light is now flashing so looks like it's charging normally. What do you think is the chance of getting some life back in to this battery and some useful Ah? If it works again it will only have to deal with a few LED lights for now, but know I will have to get a new battery eventually to run the inverter and 12V water pump.

    Yep.

The problem with a compromised battery is not so much the reduced capacity, you can live with that and use it for an appropriate application.

It's not a train smash if your 105AH battery is now a 60AH, as long as you only need and use it as a 60AH.

The main problem is often that a compromised battery just doesn't hold a charge, even if you aren't using it. They tend to self discharge in a very short time.

This is a very neglected aspect of battery performance for which I have never seen a manufacturers specification. ie, how does a batteries self discharge rate vary with battery age and condition and SOC.

As said, for the next few camps it will only be for a few LED lights, most will also be camps where 220V is available, will never ever go on a long trip with a dodgy battery.

Some guys have reported extending the battery's usefulness by up to 12 months, but as stated above, consider anything that you get as a bonus, the battery will never be up to par again. Use it while you can!

Default Excellent Service - Thank you Eric!

Just a little feedback on the inimitable Mr Skeen.

I bought a Benton BX-2 charger from him a while back, and a few days ago it would not initiate the charging cycle when plugged into AC power.

I mailed Eric about it, and he gave me a 'reset' procedure to try. When that didn't have any effect, he told me to get it back to him and he'd have a look and try some fault-finding.

A day or two later, before he had even received the unit I had returned to him, I received another mail from him saying he'd already couriered me a replacement unit as mine was still covered by his warranty.

That, Gentlemen, is how to successfully run a customer-oriented business!

Thank you Eric, it's always a pleasure doing business with you - thank you again for backing your product and your customers 100%!

Paul, it's only a pleasure! The faulty unit arrived the day we closed for December and it is still sitting in its sealed Speed Services bag, and it can silently wait just there until we re-open in January!

    Default How does it work?

    Hi Family Dog,

I understand that the bigger units - e.g. BX2 - has a supply mode in order to lift a very low battery to a chargeable minimum - 8V or so. This then allows the charger to work as advertised.

On the BX1 (Pro) it states that it can get a battery back from 3V, although it does not have the supply feature in the comparison table.

How does this work? Or can the BX2 recover from even lower, say <1V?

PS I am of a technical background, so the explanation may waft in that realm .

Just the way it is designed. The older BX-1 chargers required 8-10v from the battery in order to commence charging and they do not incorporate a 'Boost' facility, such as the mode used in the BX-2. The newer BX-1 Pro version has apparently been programmed to charge batteries at a somewhat lower minimum voltage, as they state 3v, which is probably the minimum voltage at which the charger can sense what type of battery it is connected to. It does not feature a user-selectable Boost mode as such. The BX-2 should be able to charge a 12v battery that has fallen to 4.5v.

    Hi FD,

My Benton BX-1 has died today! Connected it to a battery, was charging fine but came back 10 minutes later to find all the lights off and no action..! I've swapped it to other plug points that I know are working so I can't blame Eskom for this one...

Is there a reset method or is it something I could send in to get looked at?

    Thanks in advance.
