After much humming and avoiding I went and had a check up. They took the blood and checks came back negative.... Then my Dr decided to ### me out on my weight etc etc. The reason I went is that my BIL has just had his prostate removed due to cancer and further they discovered cancer around the site. So he has had to go for radiation treatment.

No, the Dr did not stick his finger into my brain box

You should be getting the finger every 3-4 years over 50, bloods are only about 80% accurate - just make sure he is not massaging your shoulders while doing it

Good idea to have a screening colonoscopy every 4-5 years as well.

Yup, I ignored this and am now sitting with stage 4 cancer of the prostate, am going for hormone injections, then brachy, then 9 months of radiation!

I was lucky, it is still mainly confined to the prostate, and hasn't spread to the lymph nodes or bones yet.

Started with a PSA test result of 27,25 where it should be below 4.

Went to the urologist, did the finger test, followed by a scan, then more blood tests.

Had an MRI, and a bone scan, now the treatment plan has been approved by Discovery,

but this first lot of tests have cost me about 40K out of pocket so far. (Hospital plan)

I had a temperure of 38,7 degrees over the weekend with chills and pain in my body., I went to see if the doctor could give me a covid test. The first thing the doctor did was too shake my hand on meeting him.He told me straight i dont have covid.

A urine test showed elevated protein levels in my urine. I dont really know what that means. A finger test later now means I have to wait for the blood results to come back. But its got my back and hips. Who would ever think back pain and leg pain can be related to your prostrate.

I notice a forum member who responded to this very same thread passed away from prostrate cancer so thats why I suggest ,just get checked.

Once I had stomach ache, thought it was the appendix, Temps etc and of course the pressure hose was not working well nor squirting out a steady strong stream of castle lite. Dr did an ultrasound, funny thought came to mind, and found my prostate was infected. A few antibiotics etc and I was back to normal. So hopefully this is all you have Plunger.

I caught it very early before any symptoms at all. A routine PSA test indicated a problem. Ultrasound, digital probing and no symptoms indicated no problems, so it was biopsy time. The biopsy showed a very aggressive cancer with a Gleason scale of 7. With no intervention i would have been dead within a year or two with major pain in the legs and back - Not a nice way to go. Brachy in 2013 sorted me out completely.

The only problems now are sitting on hard surfaces. Due to the prostate being compressed by hard surfaces, the radioactive inserts push into the flesh and cause some bleeding and at worst infection. I avoid any hard seats and convex upholstery. Bicycles and motorbikes are obviously out.

I had a real moan at ABSA bank in Cape Gate as they remodeled their bank with hard wooden seats with no backrests for waiting clients. So I was forced to sit with elbows on my knees which squeezed the prostate on the hard bench. A day later it was very tender.

A PSA test in Oct 2018 picked up a count of 12.
My GP panicked and had me on my side with my pants down in no time at all. He could feel a growth. He put me on some meds and ordered a second test 2 weeks later. Score had gone up to 18 (in just 2 weeks). Even more panic. He just said to me if it was him or his son with such a high score, that they would rush to Gauteng and get to see the best Urologist. Which I duly did.
The Jhb Urologist said to me that very few GP "finger test" reports amount to anything. He did however complement my doctor on his report.
He obviously also felt the growth. And a sonar scan confirmed it. Still, nobody knew if it was cancer or not. PSA is at best an indication that your prostate is under stress and a growth can be anything.
Biopsy is the only real test, because it gives the clever guys actual prostate tissue to inspect. My biopsy consisted of 13 core samples, one of which showed cancer growth, and not aggressive either. The net result was a very low Gleason score. I did however become very sick after the biopsy. First it was a reaction to one of the THREE antibiotics prescribed to me during the biopsy and then came a hectic infection. I didn't realise it was an infection, I simply thought that is how one should feel after a biopsy. I eventually self diagnosed infection. Subsequently my GP called the dipstick into my urine sample a Xmas tree. All the little segments on the paper strip broke out in colour.
The Oncologist was confused - runaway PSA, but low Gleason score. He gave me some more muti to be followed by another PSA test. If PSA went up again he wanted to go look for more cancer in the vicinity. This was the first time that I felt panic. That PSA came back at 18 as well - no more escalation.
We opted for Brachytherapy, which was carried out April 2019. The only bad thing about the Brachytherapy was that my granddaughter wasn't allowed to sit on my lap. A place she really liked and her 2 year old brain battled to cope with the sudden denial.
After the biopsy my "pee habits" went for a ball of sh1t. I'd go 4-5 times a night and I couldn't hold back the need either. I didn't get enough sleep and I suffered from terrible night sweats.
Subsequent PSA tests have shown a steady, if slow, drop in score. I did it quarterly and the last one was Jan this year.
The arrival of Corona and lockdown meant that I stopped going for further follow-up tests. The amazing thing is that exactly one year after Brachytherapy my "pee habits" suddenly improved.

I had my arm twisted to give/donate blood...

Kill two birds with one stone... someone gets the benefit of your blood to save their life... AND, you get some "free" blood testing...

A case was picked up from our group last year, the results were fed back and the necessary steps taken, waiting for the second round of testing but it is looking clear so far.

The biopsy is done through the rectum. This is the reason powerful antibiotics are given as fecal matter can get into the prostate or abdomen.

The only bad thing about the Brachytherapy was that my granddaughter wasn't allowed to sit on my lap. A place she really liked and her 2 year old brain battled to cope with the sudden denial.

Small animals should also not be allowed on your lap after brachy.

After the biopsy my "pee habits" went for a ball of sh1t. I'd go 4-5 times a night and I couldn't hold back the need either. I didn't get enough sleep and I suffered from terrible night sweats. The amazing thing is that exactly one year after Brachytherapy my "pee habits" suddenly improved.

The night pee's are common after brachytherapy. The night sweats can also be due to the Androgen Ablation chemotherapy you may have had. I had those too and it's what women describe as "Hot flushes" when their hormones go tilt. Not sure if they used ablation to get rid of your testosterone like they did with mine just before and after the Brachy. Testosterone causes the cancer to grow before Brachy kills the cancer. I used to get so hot that I threw off all the covers during winter in Fraserburg where the temperature goes into the minuses. My urologist had me injected with female contraceptives to cure the hot flushes. I got some weird looks in the pharmacy until I explained.

My pee habits also normalised after about a year. I now don't get up for a pee and I'm not bursting in the morning either.

With the prostate it's best to check with a specialist before any self medication. The need to pee with brachytherapy and prostate cancer is caused by swelling of the prostate which reduces the bladders capacity.

Silodyx is used to treat the symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH, an enlarged prostate gland) in adults. The prostate gland is an organ found at the base of the bladder in men. When enlarged, it can cause problems with the flow of urine.
The medicine can only be obtained with a prescription.

    Note the benign part?

I wonder if it would not be advisable to see a urologist if you have been diagnosed with an enlarged prostrate. ?How do you really have piece of mind after this.?

Is there a prostrate maintainence program.?
