Default places to around Mpunguti Marine Reserve

I am driving up the coast from Dar es Salaam and crossing the border at Horo-Horo and looking for somewhere to stay in the vicinity of Vanga, Shimoni and along that coast that isn't too expensive. Most of the places I have found so far cater for the international tourist with $$$$ to spend.
Can anyone help?, Camp sites? or inexpensive lodges

Try Peponi Beach resort or Beach Crab Resort, both have camping and are popular with self-drivers. Google.

Apologies, not thinking. I am busy researching for an upcoming trip. In the area between the border and Mombasa there is really not much out of the luxury class.

One to consider is Twiga Lodge. This is situated just over half way between the border and Mombasa. It is a traditional camping option and commonly used by self-drivers. I gather that camping is the option to take as the buildings and rooms are old.

+1. Twiga at Tiwi Beach, haven't been there in ages, but it was always the overlanders' place of choice. Had legendary status - we actually lived there for nearly two months while working on the coast, and I see from TripAdvisor that it is still going strong. Just don't stay in their rooms, grubby to say the least. Next door was a place called Tiwi Mini-lets, not sure if it is still going.

Closer to Shimoni, there's also Wasini Mpunguti Lodge http://www.wasini-lodge.com/accomodations.html
Again, I haven't been there for ages, but it used to be a pleasant spot.

Plenty of places in Diani, the place is empty now so can bargain hard.

Depending on budget (low to high)

    -www.dianidrifters.com (self catering)

    -Watano House (self catering)

-South Coast Backpackers (this is a party place and not on the beach)

    -Kenyaways

    -Afrika Pearl

    -Lantana Galu Beach

    -Leopard Beach Hotel

-Swahili Beach Hotel (beautiful resort but bad beach)

Best beaches are to the south of Diani (Kenyaways, Afrika Pearl, Lantana)
