Stones thrown up on N1

On Wednesday last week a construction vehicle on the N1 (Paarden Island) had stones flying out of it's trailer:



This is the result:



R250 excess and a new windscreen. Question, while I cannot prove negligence on the part of the construction vehicle, it really irks me that this kind of thing can happen without some form of censure.

Same thing happened to me on the N4 towards Nelspruit! I was really annoyed and now i have to bear the costs..

I'm not entirely sure, but I thought in that situation you would have to alert the driver of the vehicle which caused the damage, stop, exchange information, and then carry on.

Happened to me last week. Truck company says if something is on the road and a vehicle throws the object towards your car the damaged is your own issue. I can take it further as I stopped the driver and he told me that there was nothing on the road but my damage wasn't to bad.

Problem is you need to prove that the stone was dropped by the vehicle. In the case of a stone thrown up from the road surface there is no case. But at speed it happens so quickly, so who is at fault? Legally, no-one it seems.

As far as i know in namibia you can get a fine if stones are flying off your truck,the giys down there remove all stones that was spilled when it was loaded

Some normally ends up on the back bumper and wheel arches

I despise large trucks.

I travel from Cape Town to Jansenville and back via Laingsburg and Beaufort West once a month to visit my parents, and I deal with what feels like hundreds of trucks on that road.

The majority, say 90%, of trucks are in good condition, their drivers are considerate and overtaking them is not an issue.
But then you get some a$$#@les that thinks the entire road belongs to them, and drive with zero consideration towards other road users.

I fully blame the government for not utilising the excellent railway network we once had. If they did their work we would have far fewer of these dangerous behemoths on our roads.

I'm just glad you didn't get hurt in the incident Clifford, the things that falls of these trucks can be lethal sometimes.
