    Default mKhuze camping

    Hi all.
We want to take aprox. one week to ten days break camping at mKhuze in KZN in September. Is the camp site up to scratch? I've heard some positive and also negative reports. If anyone has been this year please give some feedback. We want to go and relax and view some game and recharge some batteries.

The camp area is very basic. Power in the evenings from 17:00 till 22:00.
Ablusions old but clean and acceptable.
Security at this stage not a problem, road to mKhuze can be a challange if it rains.
We were there in April 2014 and quite a few times before.
A lot of people do not like the place as it is to "rustic" for them.
We enjoy the peace and quiet, you can see the place in 3 days, but if you want you can sit at some of the hides for hours.
In the dry season the waterholes have plenty game, wet season they hide mostly in the bush.
    Some photos in the camp.
We always camp at the same spot, across the pathway from the first set of ablusions.
The tree protects you from late afternoon hot sun in summer.
Pool late at night with some friends.
SOme of the interior roads when it rains.

What's the game situation like and I've heard there is noise from outside the park in the evenings? Is the power in the evening enough to charge batteries to keep the fridge going. Ta.

    Docbos,
We never had a issue with noise (yet) from out side the camp.
The guys in the camp was a bit noisy one day but they were told to behave, end of story.

We have seen losts of game the times we were there, we tend to stay away from the tar type roads and travel more the tracks way and spend time at the hides/waterholes.
We had friends going there and they did not see much, it rained the two days prior so there were plenty water in the veld.

Always been lucky and saw lots, never the elephants but saw the spoor plenty times.

They have released some lion last year, we missed them with a few minutes in April this year.

PM me your e-mail and I can sent you some photos.

We do not use the power, run a solar panel to keep the batteries charged (130 Watt panel & 2 x 105 DC).
The 5 hours should be sufficient, depending on your power use, type of charger and battery size.

    Default Mkhuze camping

Figured it out Danie. Sent you a PM. I'm not set up for solar. We have a glider 7ft stainless trailer semi off road with 14 inch rims and raised suspension with roofrack and use a dome tent plus extention. We used to caravan but downgraded as it's just the two of us. I thought these days that there is power everywhere and did not need the solar bit. Maybe I'm wrong! We have the 12v fridge freezer etc and a 220v freezer which can be left at home when no 220v available. I see your solar panel is quite big. Maybe a smaller panel and one deep cycle battery will work to keep the fridge going but I have no idea how or where to buy something that would suit us...maybe something that can be built on. Thanks for your feedback by the way.

We've camped there a few times, always enjoyed it and will definately go again. Never had any problems with noise from outside the park. I remember the first time we went, I was not sure if one gets allocated a site or can pick one, so I phoned the office and ask if I could set up camp on any site. The lady replied "eisch sir that would not be very wise". When I asked why not and what could happen to me, she replied "not all the plugs are working, so it is wise to test it first"! We realised since that MOST plugs are not working so if you want to make use of it, it is indeed wise to test it before putting up camp.

We also spend more time in the hides than on the road, Kumasinga hide is a gem in the dry season.

Sounds good to me. Will definitely go and try it out. Are you also set up for solar power? The Mkhuze website says that there is also power in the morning from 5 to 8am. Is this true?
How do you test for power when it is off during the day when you arrive?

Yip there is power in the mornings (I'm sure we had it till about 9am) and the afternoons/evenings. I used it to get a little charge back in the battery and the fridge in my caravan is 220 only so I managed get that running at least twice a day! I always left here in the afternoon and arrived when the power is on - so never had that problem! Suppose a nice long extension will help if you pick a wrong spot.

We have never used the local power there, always solar.

Your trailer sounds like nice setup, we are just two and did the downgrade from big caravaan to tent 15 years ago.
Now the bones need some luxuries then in 2011 up to the Echo 4

Depends on how power hungry your fridge is you should get away with a decent 80-100 Amp battery and charger.

If you visit "none power" places e.g Eksdom supply type it might be wise to start off with something small for solar - depends how often you go, else rent.
You can get a cheap solar charger for R500 and 80Watt panel for about R1500 or even less - depend where you buy and what.

The 130 Watt panel is about 20-30% more than we require in summer.
Unfortunately bit akward to handle, 2 x 80 Watt would make more sense and you can buy one now and later get the second one.

Current automation in River Horse valley, Durban is a good place to start or even your local electronic shop (carefull they tend to be expensive) or try ACDC (NPN, ND or NP). Use Ms Google, she knows every thing.

We have the HCdP power pack in the Echo with solar input, thus only got the panel extra.

    Will e-mail some pics tonight.

    Hi Lads & ladies
We are looking at going to kosi in December 2014 and wanted to break the beach with a couple of days in the bush .I know that comfort is relative but is it worth staying over (camping) in mkhuze for a couple of days or extending our stay in kosi

I see flexopower is a good setup and the voetspore guys are using them. It is a roll up panel and can be doubled up from one 80W to 160W and from one battery to two. These guys at flexopower are really jacked up and supply the military as well. they supply regulators and plugs including Brad Harrison 50amp connectors that suits my fridge ie. you take power from the panel and the rest goes into the battery and when the sun goes down it takes power from the battery. This is sufficient for the fridge and some led lights. Its specifically set up for 4x4 camping. When you do have power you can charge you battery with the ctek using 220v. With eksdom the way it is even where they promise power all the time it pays to have the backup of solar and battery.

Flexipower is good but expensive, reason I went for a solid panel.
You can connect quite a few on the same controller provided it can handle the Volts and Amps.

Just a note, I use red BH connectors on the solar setup.
Once connected the panel to the grey BH at the towbar, one battery later.

Interesting and informative article in this months Country Life magazine. Worth a read if you are interested in a visit to uMkuze. We're heading up there next week to camp. I'll report back after our visit.

My advise would be to do 3-4 days in Mkhuze, drive to Ndumo and another 3-4days, while you are in Ndumo you can do a day trip to Tembe Elephant park.

Northern KZN probably has some of the best kept secret parks in SA.

Yo Docbos. I also went the flex panel route--2x 75 watt. I had to do this because no space for solid panels. Found that I could not get full power to 2 batteries. Have made a folding rack (looks like folding clothes drying rack) for the panels which means I can set panel angle to the sun---huge difference to output. This only works if you are in camp to do the moving. If I was really clever I would find something to make the rack follow the sun. But I aint. Cheers. Maliyavuza.
