Thumbs up Greeting to the Community!

    Hi all,

Firstly, thank you for such a great forum! Can really see the benefit of being part of the family

My name is James, and I've recently moved from driving a Toyota 86 Sports car,
http://www.toyotazone.co.za/ownerszo...eam-come-true/ , to a FJ Cruiser! People say "But its so impractical!" only to have me reply, "Did you see my sports car!?"

I've always wanted a 4x4, and it was finally time to grow up and play with the real manne!

2 Days ago, I had my first 4x4 adventure - Left Cape Town early and took a trip up Matroosberg! It was wonderful and a great challenge to a 4x4 newbie like me!

I have always loved the outdoors and am from a small town in the Eastern Cape. Although I have been on a few trips with my dad (who has owned a few land cruisers and now a Prado) it was always him driving in the really tough stuff. Luckily it has given me a great respect for the trail, and being stuck a couple of times taught me the proper use of things like the (to be very careful with) hi lift jack.

There is always so much more to learn, and I am a big fan of the 7Ps saying:
"Proper Prior Preparation Prevents Piss Poor Performance!"

Planning for a trip up Matroosberg and not knowing exactly what to expect, I decided to get some basic recovery kit just in case. I'm sure I will get some great advise on what I still need from you guys and gals. This is my list of haves and needs so far:
    - Hi Lift Jack + Baseplate
    - Lift-mate to use it to lift the wheels (as the FJ is plastic wrapped. Also want to think of a solution other than a strap holding it away from the vehicle)
    - D shackes
    - A decent shovel
    - A short and long towing strap (so can use the HI Lift as a winch in a bind)
    - a Compressor and decent gauge.
    - Basic medkit
    - Metal military ammo box (from my uncle) to hold it all :-)

    Still want:
    - Tyre repair kit
    - Decent snatch strap
    - A pair of snow chains (I have the default Dunlop GrandTreks on which are not the best for mud and snow)
    - What you suggest!

Some pics of Matroosberg (2014/07/13) below
Look forward to meeting some of you on one of the get togethers!

    Kind regards

    James

Welcome James... And well done on you purchase of an FJ.

Join us on some outings to nearby trails in the future. Watch the WC section for information.

Two days go... Was that Sunday?

Edit, I see it was the 13th, Sunday, sorry.

Forget the D Shackles, get Bow Shackles.

Welcome, Good move but your FJ can also go fast enough for speed fines.

    Default Nice Fj

Enjoy the FJ. The best way to find out what you need is to do short local trips.
You will soon be sorted. We all tend to take to much at first.

The Fj is a cool fun car to drive.
    Nice pictures.

    Welcome, James!

For a snatch strap and matching recovery equipment, review the forums for "pofadder", provided by Engel.
For underbody protection, have a look for stofpad4x4 (Uys).

    Regards
    Make it happen!
