    Talking Tempting - snow!

Mmmm, snow. Pic taken today from 20 kays outside Edendale.
Looks like we might get some fun in the snow after all...

    Hi Grant,

Sounds good. I guess we should start thinking about timing etc...
May I suggest we meet at Himeville Arms at 08h00? Or, should we travel up in convoy?

    Anyone else keen?

Kippie, sorry man; didn't mean to overlap the Epangeni thing...would be nice if one could plan around snow a couple weeks in advance. Don't worry though; I'm sure (hoping) there'll be more trips this Winter...

    Ciao

No worries, was just yanking your chain. There will definately be lots more snow this year. It will apparently be a severe winter this year. Yippee. I will definately come on the next one.

    Cheers

Personnel at the Border Posts are so fast asleep that you could probably just drive straight through with your parents sitting below window-level height. They never checked my car for anything, but you never know...

AFAIK you apply for a temp passport at Inland Affairs and get it about a week later. Had to do that when one of the kids' passport application took to long for a trip.

I wouldn't try taking them in without it, as the problem might be getting them out. A friend of a friend apparently got stuck in no-man's land a few years ago when he drove past a hut (border post) in an Africa country and couldn't get in other side and they wouldn't allow him back the side. He was stuck for a few days with no food trying to get it sorted and eventually the Pretoria Dept of Inland Affairs had to get involved.

No you can't, I would suggest a temporary one. If the group is big enough you could smuggle them in and out, I've done it plenty. My lightie has been to Lesotho about 3 times without passport. BUT, my last trip up Sani, late last year, we were searched for the first time, it looked like they were actually doing a head count.

They were alot more wide awake than usual last time I went up too. I wouldn't risk it, too far to go to turn around and go home.

    hi Rassie,

had the same dilemma as you, had to go apply for passport but heres the fun part!!!!
from what i was told at home affairs you first have to apply for your permanent passport then only can you apply for your temporary.
you looking at about +-R500 - 00 for both per person.
you also have to provide the dept of home affairs with a letter of motivation why it is that you need a temporary passport so urgently, well here i guess you just have to lie through your teeth the temp takes a maximum of ten working days.
hope i managed to take the wind from your sails!!!!
thanks. oh by the way permanent take about 2 to 3 months

    Some pics from the w/end...

Most of the snow had melted; but still enough to have some fun.
Saw the first 'Cobra' to go up the pass...eish, wouldn't like to see his undercarriage after all that!

Pass wasn't too bad, alot of 'slosh' & ruts from the melted snow.
SA boarder officials were snug in their office - no checking of plates/VIN's or number of people.

They did stop a 4x2 dble cab however from going up...said the pass was strictly for 4x4's!! (then you see the cobra rolling past - go figure!?)

Some nice snow further into Lesotho...had to build a snowman (cause I couldn't play in the snow with my Landy - seeing as we were the only ones there)!

Anyway, should be a good winter this year - plenty more snow on the way...

    Ciao
