    Default Safe water storage

What's the lifespan of stored water?

Water stored in a tank in your vehicle: How long is it safe? Must the tank be drained and cleaned, and how often?

Bottled water: I often buy water (normal bottles and 5litre cans) and use a bit. Then the bottle stands. How long is it safe to use water that has been opened and stored?

I've often wondered at what stage water becomes unsafe to consume? Not just yucky, but dangerous to your health.

I store my water for more than a month at a time. But I also only used filtered water that has a TDS of about 25. That about the same as bottled water. No problems to date.

It really depends on how much residual chlorine there is, assuming you use tap water. This will carry on killing bugs for a while. If you are using a cleaned water bottle, you will generally be quite safe - rinse before use with a little bit of Jik or Milton diluted in a lot of water and then rinse with tap water until the taste is gone. A tank with a little bit of water swilling around is going to grow some bugs, unless it is filled and used under sterile conditions.

Tap water should keep longer than filtered water, unless the filtered water is kept clean. Unfortunately there are too many variables here for me to give an answer I would be comfortable with. I have drunk water which started off as tap water and had been kept in a clean bottle in the back of the Disco for more than 2 weeks with no ill effect.
