From what the lady from MTO tells me, this is pretty much open - all you need is to get the permit and off you go:

Permits and a map are available from 7H00 17H00 @ R150 per vehicle. Please see photos attached.

The gate guard will issue the permits. The MTO Forestry gate is next to the Elgin Country Club gate.

I have no idea on the actual route.

Thanks, Derren, that clears up our access to the area, but iirc the trail markers indicated left where we turned right onto a regular gravel road to get back on asphalt at the end of it. Seems like we may have to go back and do the whole thing...

Thanks, Naks, that seems more in line with other prices for that type of trail, afaik, anyway.

Is this trail still open to the public?
I would like to see the history of the trail and would love to see the view from up top.

Hi, is this trail still usable? Do one just rock up at the gate and get permits?

Yep still open, been there a few times recently. Yes you can get a permit at the gate next to the Elgin Grabouw country club. The map isn't great but getting lost is part of the fun.

    Hi guys,

Has anyone been to this trail lately?

I would like to go tomorrow morning but cannot get hold of the MTO for a permit.

Can one just go there and get a permit at the gate?

I managed to get hold of the reserve office...

They have advised that the 4x4 trail cannot be driven... Only walked or bike...

Perhaps i got through to the wrong place...

Any advice? Would like to do a mountain trail tomorrow...

Betaal. Ry. So 40km se roete.
