Default The world’s greatest rhino sanctuary is under threat

The world’s greatest rhino sanctuary is under threat. Plans are underway to build an open-cast coal mine just 40 metres from the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi park. Rangers fear it will destroy the wilderness and clear the way for poachers, who have butchered nearly 400 rhinos in South Africa this year alone, but we can stop it if we act now.

Conservationists, scientists and local communities all oppose the mine and are shocked that the government has allowed it to progress this far. But a new Mineral Resources Minister is starting this week, and if we all speak out we could make stopping this rhino threatening mine the first issue on his desk.

The Minister will want to win hearts when he first comes into office. Let’s make this mine publicly toxic. Click to join the urgent call to save the rhinos, and then tell everyone. If we reach 100,000 signatures this week, Avaaz will welcome the new Minister to work with a herd of cardboard rhinos:

Not to be a anti nature person but what negative impact will a coal mine have on the area?

They dig a hole roughly 60m deep, take out the coal and put the ground back? They barely use water as most modern coal washing plants takes about 5% makeup or clean water and there is no harmfull byproduct?

They employ people and generate income?

The Waterberg is already being seriously impacted on by mining, water extraction, coal dust pollution etc according to reports I have seen.

No, but that is not whats happening here. Its only bordering the reserve and not in it.

Durban - A proposed coal mine bordering on KwaZulu-Natal’s world-famous Hluhluwe-iMfolozi game park, is said to be a danger to the area’s rhino population.

AVAAZ is a very reputable organisation, not just a web petition site and have a good track record for getting things done.

    Spot the coal mine?

This one sells 6mil tonnes of coal anually.

Uses less than 50m3 per day and has dust limits far below national environmental std.

This is new modern mining. Farmers are happy and they have good crops on rehabilitated ground every year.
So is it really that bad? I dont see us complaining when the economy grows but we moan when a strike on a mine causes economy to shrink?

Obviously EI studies need to happen and consideration needs to be taken of cause and affect.
    But its not all bad.
