    Default Advice: Shortening trailer axle

A wise man once told me that you can shorten a trailer axle by cutting and rewelding it close to the centre. Apparently it doesn't really carry any weight there, it just keeps the two pins pointing in the right direction.

    Any comments, suggestions or ideas?

True, but you have to make sure it is straight afterwards. Will also help if you box the weld with plate.

Rampie, take the diameter of the axle if it's round or the dimension of the square. Have to channels bent up that can be welded down the centre once clamped on. The inside dimension of the the channel legs must be the same as the outside dimension of the axle.
If the axle is i.e 50mm, the channel must be bent 24mm - 50mm - 24 mm. You would require 2 halves and clamp them over the axle then weld. The "box" must be at least 300mm long and you can drill some 20mm holes that can also be plug welded to the axle.

To make sure it's straight, tac weld four flat bars around the axle on the edge of the flat so that you can get in to weld in-between. Also, if the axle is solid, you would have to grind a chamfer on to ensure a descent weld.
