Default Fair price for 2nd hand Zero 40L

I am very ignorant on this topic and need help. What is a fair price to pay for a second hand Zero 40l fridge. Also, what is the difference between a 3 way Zero and, for eg. the Engel 40l?

3 way = gas, 12v and 220V where as the Engel 40 will be 12v and 220V. Not sure of the model but the Engel will have a compressor motor whereas the Zero might not (depending the model) hope this help.

    Hi Oulouis

If it is a 3way I am almost sure that it is an ammonia based unit these units are prone to rust on the inside and a clean out & re gas will set you back in the region of 1k also they do not work while the vehicle is moving and they must be placed horizontally with proper ventilation to work properly.
These units battle to drop down to -5 and anything below this is just a bonus, best performance is to put pre frozen goods in.

On the other hand the engel type units are compressor driven and will operate while the vehicle is in motion and drop down to -30 on idle speed. I have not heard of any big reliability issues with these units so I can not comment. Drawback is that you need a reliable power source either 12 or 220v as these units can not operate on gas and are much more expensive but on the plus side they are much more energy efficient.

On a price for a zero I would not pay much more than 1k and then the unit must work and the casing be in good nick. Check that the burner is working properly and if you take a simple continuity tester see that both the 12 & 220 coils have continuity. The zero was one of the better makes.

Personally I would go for the compressor type if you plan to do a lot of driving around but the gas type will do fine if you operate from a fixed base camp. I have a gas type fridge and freezer and have had no problems with the operation of said units. I have found the rust problem to be minimised if the units are kept running on 220 while not in use.

Hope I have shed a little more light on this subject.

I have one in good condition. Its a Zero, think 37liters, that you can make an offer on. I've upgraded to the 40l Engel.

Will work when powered on 12v. Not nearly as effective as the gas option though.

And the Zero is 35l, not 40.

Strangely my 35L Zero is the most effective on mains power.

Opposite here, gas just kicks the crap out of the mains connection.

Odd... I've never come across a 3-way fridge where 220 is more effective than gas... Gas kicks ass 12v is the worst.

Thank you all for the response and advice. I think I should rather go for an Engel or NL if I travel a lot (which I do). If anybody has one lying around - or maybe you want to upgrade to a larger unit - give me a shout.

For a reasonable second hand engel, that's a decent price, but we're getting OT...
