    This is a tricky one..

My first impression is an immature Ayre's Hawk Eagle, but it would be a pretty strange sighting where you are (although not impossible as it is close to the edge of the range)

The presence of the nuchial crest, pale eyes, dark bill with yellow cere and general colouration point me to the Ayres. Although it "could" be a booted eagle, but the eye is the wrong colour, no nuchial crest and no landing lights I can see.

My first impression was that it is a juvenile/sub-adult Booted Eagle. The brown blotches on the chest indicates that this bird is still changing plumage.

Booted Eagles have honey brown eyes which could show up reasonably pale at times depending on the light and one could accept that the pale feathers on the shoulders could be headlights in the making?

The curve ball is that this bird has a barred vent and the fact that the gape ends just in front of the eye. Eagles have a longer gape extending to in line with the center of the eye or even longer. (A good distinguishing feature between Tawny and Wahlbergs).

Johan, I'm seriously considering the possibility that you have yourself a sub-adult pale form of European Honey-Buzzard here.

Honey Buzzards have the most variable plumage possible, even more so before maturity. In a sub-adult eye colour could range from brown to yellow, colour of the cere could range from yellow to grey. The finer ID features unfortunately don't show up well in this photograph but it shows a small head and pigeon like appearance.

    I'm convinced

Just looking at it again it doesnt look like any of the Honey Buzzards we get in our part of the world, but yes, I'm sure it's Honey Buzzard. What nuchial crest is an oddity though.

I must be honest, except for many pics, I've only seen one EHB in the field, that I know of.

Here is a cropped pic of the head, you can see some similarities and I guess if he ruffles up his neck a bit it could look a bit like a nuchial crest?

I asked Henk to perform a bit of Photoshop magic on the pics but unfortunately he could not extract much from it.

    This pic is interesting tho:
It still shows the remnants of the osprey like facial mask which is evident during the immature stage as well as a scaled feather pattern on the nape and wing, see my pic above.

Johan, I've managed to convinced myself.
IMO you enjoyed a rare visit from an European Honey-buzzard. He probably made use of your hospitality on his long trek back home.

This past summer was a very good year for EHB's, off the cuff I think 20-something individual birds were reported country wide.
It's a huge rarity and awesome sighting!
