Cool Re: Bush Lapa : experience HIS beauty @

We’ve just spent 10 days in the Richtersveld. What an epic trip with some of the best campsites we’ve ever stayed at. We stayed at Sendelingsdrift, De Hoop, Kookerboomskloof, Richtersberg and Tatasberg. We arrived at Sendelingsdrift via Port Nolloth and Alexander Bay and returned by crossing over the pont at Sendelingsdrift into Namibia and returned via Aussenkehr and Noordoewer to Vioolsdrift.

    What we learned
    • never travel on the Alexander Bay to Sendelingsdrift road again - worst corrugations I’ve experienced- a second spare wheel mounted on the roof rack with a front runner attachment nut and bolt bracket came loose
    • the road from Sendelingsdrift to Vioolsdrift in Namibia is gravel but is like a highway by comparison. Got into trouble with Swambo getting too into the roller coasters
    • it was hot, really hot as in 40 degrees even very early spring but the weather can change in a heartbeat and we had rain on the day we left the park! Gotta pack for cold nights and hot days even though our nights were T shirt and shorts warm
    • would definitely travel with 2 spare wheels and extra fuel again. We had no flats but heard of quite a few who did and the peace of mind is worth the hassle. Best advice for no flats is good luck and drive really slowly with tyres at 1.8 bar all round.
    • be prepared for wind and think about whether you really want to test your Bushwing with 30 knot gusts. It can be peaceful at one moment and then out of the blue you can have nuclear winds
    • Sendelingsdrift is a 1 nighter. It’s a long haul from Springbok or wherever to get there and it’s going to take you quite a few hours to get to the camp sites in the park unless you are staying at Pooitjiespram. We had sundowners on the balcony area overlooking the pont and the river. It was awesome
    • De Hoop. What an amazing drive via Akkedis pass and the Rooiberg pass into the campsite is very tight. We camped under the big tree in the Northern section. Brilliant campsite but we were blessed with no wind and almost being on our own for 4 nights. Then a lot of folk arrived and the winds picked up. Next time we have our eye on 2 spots in the Southern most part over a pretty tricky and tight section of road but it looks doable and another BL Boskriek gave us the idea
    • Kookerboomskloof - magnificent part of the park very different to the rest that we visited. We would spend one night here, maybe 2. There are only 4 campsites with private ablutions but no showers which I really liked cos we got to use ours!
    • Richtersberg - our favorite site cos of its small size. We stayed at the very private under the trees one but the other ones on grass are really nice too. There is a 10km road from De Hoop to Richtersberg which I understand from others is not that sandy but quite rocky. We’ll definitely give it a miss and travel ti the campsite via the inland route cos you are going to scratch your car and your van near the De Hoop campsite from branches hanging into the trail
    • Tatasberg - self catering accomo- would give it a miss next time and stay longer at Richtersberg which is only 3 kms away! We booked it cos we thought we were Oz tenting till we decided to rent a BL Miskruijer. There is a brilliant drive from Tatasberg that goes into the park for about 8 kms and definitely worth it
    • travelling to the Richtersveld in an off-road caravan feels like you are traveling first class. We saw 3 BL’s including ours in the park, 3 Imagine vans including a Cruiser Van ( never ever thought a van that size would make it through the entrance into De Hoop but the owner assured me no problem ), 3 Conquerors, 2 Mobi Lodges, 1 Enfanta, 2 XCapes. No Afrispoor Cheetah/Servals or Echo Chobe’s.
    • We exited the park via Helskloof Pass. Definitely doable- very steep in sections, big slatey off camber sections. Loooong!! Loved the 4x4 driving in the Park

If you like quiet, isolation, remoteness, nature, bird life, contemplation, a real raw wilderness experience far from civilization then this is for you. We loved it.

Nice pics. That tree at De Hoop is my favourite spot. Most people venture to the south side so you end up with peace there in the north

Really like that spot too but it may be a bit exposed to the Notherly wind which seems to be the prevailing wind. The rapids in the Nothern part though seemed to attract more bird life - Goliath heron, grey heron, African Darter.

Great pics Voyageur! Looks like you had an amazing trip! Richtersveld also on our bucketlist!

We just got back from another 6 nights in B1543.

We stayed at Doodsklip in the Baviaans, then at Doringkloof. Did the route over the mountains from Doringkloof to Kareedouw, what a drive that was. I posted those pics at the thread below.

The Baobab performed flawlessly behind my Fortuner, even at Doodsklip where there are no facilities, we camped in style.

Hi Dirk, very nice set-up. With regards to your extended roof, do you rely on the zip to support the side panel? I was always concerned that there would be too much tension on the zip.
Enjoy your long week-end camping. 😎

    Hi Braith,

Thanks, we will make the most of the long weekend

On purpose I did not pull too hard on the ropes on the extended roof to damage the zips. It will most likely not like strong wind or rain, but in this instance provides quite a bit of extra shade, which we need as shade is not aplenty and 34 by day.

I’d also like to concur with Grumbles. The BL lifestyle fits like a glove and our 5-year old boy frequently ask when can we go camping again

Was lying awake early and did a calculation, with this weekend we have slept in the Ratel 43 nights so far this year, it certainly get’s used a lot because we love it.

Sitting outside before sunrise with the call of the fish-eagle is precious.

I Could not agree more. Great way for kids to be brought up. Thank goodness my girls were no intrested in the IPAD / TV Games, but nature it self.

Can't wait for BL1942 to come off the Line.

Will be doing our last camp next month in our XT140 which I must say served us well.

Ons Kamp 14 Desember 2019 by Verneukpan. Wil vandaar af na Kammieskroon ry. Iemand dalk inligting oor die pad Kammieskroon toe? Sal graag die BL wil toets in daardie wereld.
