Am I the only one who think the use of many of these acronyms on an adult based forum are stupid and childish? Besides the obvious and more recocnized one's, these belong on a children's SMS chat room, like mixit.

So why do you use an acronym like SMS in your post?

    Do you never refer to

    • diff
    • 4x4
    • 4WD
    • ABS
    • CV Joint
    • ECU
    • EFI
    • GPS
    • LPG
    • LSD
    • OHC
    • SWB & LWB

    ?

To many the above are not 'obvious and more recognized' at all.
In the 4x4 world, the ones discussed here are as 'obvious and recognized' as the others.
Where do you draw the line?

    Just asking.

IIRC there has been nothing wrong with using TLA's in general conversation AFAIK...

BTW, if you consider the evolution of languages, this is just another step in the evolution of ours.

I often read someone referring to “bump”, I gather it has something to do with not getting a reply, please clarify

It "bumps" your thread to the top of the "latest posts" list, just to get attention.

I agree with Wessie. The ones listed in 4ePajero's latest post are all pretty much accepted tech terminology, and some of the others such as IMO, IIRC, AFAIK, BTW, HTH, etc, can be pretty useful. It's when the acronyms become longer than many English words that they become more of a bother than a useful tool. Some can be somewhat humorous if used once or twice, but thereafter they just become tedious.

Yet another newbie that does not understand a lot of the acronyms that's been used. For example, what does 'TOS' mean?

OK, study them meticulously - tomorrow at 15:00 you will be writing an examination on them. A 100% pass rate is required.

Family_Dog, your reply is one of the reasons why I just love this forum. OK, I'll try and study, but only if I can find the study material.

Found it, read it!! I am a quick learner. What I could pick up is that it will never be difficult to stay inline. The why this forum is handled by it's owner (Dirk, your site is fantastic) and the moderators is just awesome. I enjoy it everytime I visit.

She Who Always Must Be Obeyed.

Many others, search "swambo", you'll find the answer.
