    Default Recovery resistance

    Found these lurking on my PC, couldn't find where I got them.

    If you're recovering a vehicle, it pays to know how much resistance you're likely to encounter. Use the two flowcharts to work out the resistance, add the two figures and then apply to the vehicle weight.

    Example:
    My Jeep is stuck, and it needs to be towed out of soft sand over an incline of around 35 degrees. It was spun in, up to the wheels. The Jeep weighs 800kg's wet. Thus, being mired in sand up to the wheels, is 1 times vehicle weight. 35 Degrees is between 50% and 75% of vehicle wight, so guestimate it at around 65%.

    Thus, the resistance encountered when pulling this very light vehicle out of this situation is 1300kg's. That would mean that, if a UNIFORM pull is exerted, this recovery can be done with a 2-ton breaking strain tow strap. remember that this does not take into equation the further obstacles that might eb encountered, ie mud etc.

    As a measure of safety, DOUBLE this figure to see what the minimum breaking strain is for ALL equipment used in the recovery.

    The you'll probably also love this - it's called a "stiff-leg" and is used extensively by paramedics and ems personnel in the states. I've been dying to try this out, but the last two times I've rolled my Jeep I only laid it on it's side. Pity
    It needn't be long, about 1 meter will suffice. I reckon one can hack one together in a pinch on the trail.

    Very nice info, it can be very usefull when deciding on buying recovery equipment as well. Need to keep all these factors in mind otherwise you end up spending a lot of money on equipment that is meaningless to you when stuck in certain scenarios.

    You can use you hi lift jack to perform this, then no need to carry extra equipment with you.
    Actually your hi lift jack can perform a few functions:
    Jack
    Winch
    an now this!
    (Think I'll start a thread "how many functions can your hi lift jack perform?")
