    Question Isuzu Auto Gearbox Problem

    Hi All,
I have an automatic 2007 Isuzu (Not D-Teq).
I am experiencing problems with the gearbox lately.
    Symptoms:
    1. When I pull away from a standstill the gearbox sometimes disengage, causing the engine to rev with no power to wheels and then the wheels would suddenly engage causing a pullaway with wheels spinning.
    2. While standing still or idling or creeping forward in slow traffic, the gearbox would alternately engage and disengage at random, causing the vehicle to lurch and jump.
    3. The speedo guage would jump up and down erratically when this happens.
    Any ideas anyone?
    Kind Regards
    Andre

It sounds as if you have a problem with your torque converter...

AFAIK there was a call-back by Isuzu on the auto box LDV's at the time. Something to do with the oil cooler in front of the radiator that caused issues. Find out from Isuzu (with your VIN Nr) if that was done to your truck.

May be the cause of your troubles.

Do you have enough oil in the box? Maybe do an oil change.

I have exactly the same vehicle right down to the year/model & I'm experiencing the same problem . I just got back now fro the gearbox specialist here in Durban.

The technician said I have to do a complete overhaul of the gearbox ( new pistons , clutches etc) as well as replace the radiator. All for the princely sum of R21000.00. I nearly dropped a load.

And this diagnosis was derived from a 2 minute test drive.

Hoping to find a cheaper alternative.

I would def get another opinion.... REX diff and gearbox center is probably your best bet...

    Hi All,
Thanks for all the responses. I got lucky.
I found a post on a UK site mentioning the same symptoms caused by a faulty gearbox speed sensor. I located the speed sensor of my gearbox on the drivers side towards the rear of the gearbox. The sensor has three wires coming from it. It is fixed by one M8 bolt and pulls out with a bit of wiggeling and turning. A new sensor from Delta cost me R920.80. I installed the sensor and problem solved. The speedo is now solid as a rock and the gearbox shifts smoothly.

Now can you believe that... I bet if you didn't read that post it would have caused you a great deal more on repair costs for something so silly
