Default W164 ML500 Air suspension failure and fix

After 6 and a bit years the right front strut air-bladder started losing air. Not wanting to work the compressor too hard I started the search for a replacement strut only to find out it is quite possible to replace the bladder alone.

I got into contact with Air Spring Supply Company in Jet Park who were able to supply the part, with instructions and special tools required for the princely sum of R5 130.00 incl VAT.

Did the install this morning in less than 3 hours and the ML is fixed.

    Great stuff,

How did you find the leak? Warning light?

They also stock Arnott industries range.

No warning light. I saw the drooping front right suspension. The leak was quite slow, taking about two hours to sag.

The new bladder is a Arnott industries unit.

Thanks for that info Koebelwagen. I've got a 2009 Ml 350 CDi, and am not looking forward to a bill of over R20 000 to replace the front air spring when it goes.

Any tricks regarding the fitment or things to watch out for?

A private Merc workshop tried to tell me that one couldn't just fit the air bladder only, and one had to replace the whole unit (shock plus bladder). I would be interested to find out if this works for you in the long term. Would you mind getting back to this thread sometime in the future to report back?

    Great stuff.

Even better if you had taken a few pics of process and posted here.

This forum then works as a reference manual for anything that needs doing.
