Default What determines the name "SUV"?

What makes an SUV an SUV?

Do you think the motor journo's, motor manufacturers and public has lost the plot here in SA?

I see the UK and Europe calls an SUV a vehicle that can provide entertainment(sport) while still being usable for practical tasks(utility) and is usually 4x4 in nature

Hence SUV... They call double cab 4x4 bakkies SUV's,(Not absolutely correct in my opinion, but technically, based on their definition, correct) and vehicles like the Pajero and Fortuner... they also call SUV's

But here we call everything with a certain body shape, an SUV...

like the Ford Ecosport and the Fiat 500L and the mini Clubman...(Europe call these X-over vehicles..)

How in heaven's name can an Ecosport be called an SUV?

Not even a soft roader, and definitely not a rugged one...

I have sat in one (Ecosport) and the height is decent, but agree, not an SUV.

One expects an SUV to have some kind of pretend off-road capabilities?

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sport_utility_vehicle

A sport utility vehicle (SUV) (sometimes called a sports utility wagon), is a vehicle similar to a station wagon, estate car, or a van which is usually equipped with four-wheel drive for on-road or off-road ability. Some SUVs include the towing capacity of a pickup truck with the passenger-carrying space of a minivan or large sedan.

I think we in SA misuse the SUV's a bit so for us the meaning and uses is a bit different than in Europe.

South African vehicle purchases are very much "image" driven I believe. That is why so may people buy double cabs, and the popular german makes. The name "SUV" has also become very popular in SA for some reason, and many people want one just to say they have an SUV. Thus the manufacturers exploit this in their marketing and call anything which is 10mm higher that a polo a SUV.

you get SUV's and then real 4x4 vehicles.

A SUV is anything that doesn't have a low ratio and/or the spare wheel underneath.......
