Finally, after 5 years of ownership we took our Maxi on a proper overland trip. 3300km to the Namakwa Eco Route and the Richtersveld and all I can say is that the trailer handled it brilliantly.

Super agile and easy to tow off-road even over some fairly rough terrain. The packing space for 4 people over 11 nights was sufficient even though I tow with a SWB Pajero.

The only thing I need now is a solar panel and then I am set, the batteries went a bit low but never under 11.6V but that included some engine idling when we were at De Hoop for three nights.... the fridge was was -10 on the freezer and 1 degree on the fridge side so that’s understandable.

    Awesome trailer!

The implications are that a bigger diameter tyre places more load on the brakes because the tyre brakes with less revolutions, that means the shoes have to arrest the drum in shorter distance. The rule from Burquip is that the 1600 kg axle (200 x 40mm brake shoes) is okay up to a 15 inch rim and if you go to 16 or 17 that the axle should be upgraded (But the tyre aspect ratio also comes in to play because a 15 inch rim with high ration tyre can have as big or bigger diameter than a 16 inch rim with a lower profile tyre.) You're also not loading to 1600 kgs, so my takes is that if you went to a tyre of 750mm OD, that's fine.

Bigger tyres also place bigger radial loads on the bearings, but in practice, I've never seen this to be an issue (possibly because we recommend the bigger axles when the guys pimp the tyres, but there must be many owners that have upgraded tyres on 1600 kg axles, and I have not seen failure because of this.

As Henk mentioned, then it's a matter of practically fitting the rim in the allowable space. You're welcome to send me pics at [email protected] or whattsapp 082 650 9636, and I'll take a look at your build and advise further from there.

A number of years ago you posted in a thread about the importance of spelling and grammar to the younger generation, do you remember?

Heinz, I am not trying to derail this thread or be unnecessarily critical of spelling (Or grammar) but I think you missed an “r” in the sentence above

Some of the LED strips in my Maxi is starting to give up the ghost so I'm going to replace all the strip lights. Any advice regarding what adhesive to use?

I did, I did. Bugger. I think this is the second time you've caught me out. I'm going to correct it.

Okay youngsters - It's okay to err, as long as you've tried not to, admit the mistake and correct it.

Does anyone know where I can get the basin and add on bracket/stand for my maxi? I have the bracket on fridge slide for the drying rack.

    G’day

Does anyone here tow their Maxi with a (2015-2018) Ford Ranger DC 2.2 (110kw and 118kw) auto or manual? How does it tow and what’s your consumption like?

I tow with. 3.8 petrol Jeep Wrangler unlimited which is ridiculously heavy on fuel. Did a CT-Graaf Reinet- Hamburg-Addo-Oudsthoorn-CT trip in Jan this year and the fuel bill killed the holiday budget. We’re talking about 5.5km/l average = R7.5k for 2950 km round trip.
The 3.8 and its dog 4 speed auto are also not great for towing. Peak torque of 347NM only at 4300 rpm; loads of noise with no oomph especially uphill or into a headwind.
We’re heading off to Pilanesburg from CT in December and I don’t want to have to sell a kidney to cover fuel bills.

I’m looking and changing to a diesel double cab and would appreciate any comments from your experience. The Ford seems to offer the best value for money and consumption. The double cab also provides extra space for kids bikes in the back.

    Would appreciate your input.
    Pete

I do believe that the 2.2 will be more than adequate and with the low down torque peak it will only be a massive improvement on the Jeep.
