Had a wonderful first long trip of 2900km with the Maxi. Hamburg was ridiculously windy and if it wasn’t for the storm straps (last minute purchase before leaving CT) the tent would have been ripped off.
Still learning to set up and take down the tent in a fast, efficient and effective way but we’re getting there.

The Maxi handled the wind well. The Jeep on the other hand took strain towing and the head winds. Tank to tank consumption; best 7.2km/l and worst 4.1km/l

Love the Maxi. Might have to relook towing vehicle though.

Yes, the Jeep is a fuel guzzler.

To compare towing our Maxi with strong head winds using the Pajero 3.2 diesel, I average about 13.3L/100km with a worst case scenario in gale force type highveld winds in the Freestate of 15L/100km.

A friend with a Fortuner 3.0D4D gets the same

We did about 3000km in December with pajero 3.2 and maxi. Fuel was 12l/100km average. Not bad I think. Only problem is it is a bit of a donkey.

Took delivery of my newly used maxi in mid December. First trip to Balule and Lower Sabie done.
Im very happy with the tentco Snr and awnings.
I had to check occasionally it was still behind the cruiser as it tows so well.
A few minor water leaks to sort out, but looking forward to my next trip.

    Default Metalian Maxi super thread

    Hi all

After following this thread for over a year already, it looks like i am going to fall into this trap. (And please correct me if my points below are not applicable to this thread)

We are a family of 6, not an easy figure to cater for to go camping. My kids are between 5 & 11 years old and they love camping. We do our annual trip to Sodwana and couple of weekends elsewhere.

I have been contemplating a caravan but decided against it. My choice came down to the maxi. (Just need to sort out my finances). By LOTS of reading on this forum i think the ease of setting up and the space in the maxi will be best suited for my army. Currently i owe a alustar trailer, just a box with a full house HM trailer tent. The problem with that setup is you need to unpack almost everything out of the trailer before setting up camp.

My plan on the maxi is to have a full house trailer tent, with smaller tents for the kids as they grow older. Or what do the experienced guys with big families suggest?

    Couple of questions ,

-will 2 40l engel fridges fit onto the fridge slide? Thats what i current have.
    - will an oztrail gazebo fit into the back door sliding towards the fridge?

    I will appreciate any advise

    Regards Dieter

    Hi Dieter.

The back area is 1300mm long by 620 wide x 640 high.

The fridge slide is 1000mm but only 800mm is usable else the opening of the lid becomes a problem (200mm remains in the trailer when the slide is fully extracted).

    I hope this helps.

We have 3 kids. They have their own tent. Full house tentco tent on trailer with awnings fitted to kitchen area. We fit the rest of the awnings only when needed in rainy weather. 2 x 50l fridges. One in the front slide of the trailer and one in the car when driving otherwise just on the floor in the kitchen area.
Works great for us. We do average 25 nights a year camping.

Is it possible to lower the knott surge coupling? The tow ball height on the Wrangler is quite low resulting in a very low nose when hitched. There’s little to no sag on the Jeep when hitched. I know that slightly nose down is good but this is very low.

Weight on the tow ball is under 100kg.

Yes, you can get a coupler bracket that lowers the coupler height. Some guys have asked for a 100 mm drop and then come back and taken a 75 mm drop. I'd stay with 75 even if it is still a bit nose down. Note there are two possible coupler plates. You need to get a drawing of both and then measure against yours to determine if you have the earlier or current plate. That trailer looks like about 2015 ?? - around the time the plate was amended. We just love our Metalian Maxi.

We camped at Vloedbos just outside Caledon this past weekend with 67 other families (210 plus people) for our eldest son’s Gr 1 camp out. There were quite a few camping trailers of various brands with some of them being rentals.

Our Maxi definitely attracted a lot of attention with plenty folk just popping in for a look. A few came around and said that they were told to come and have a look. I could sense some serious trailer envy.

My son is a quiet little guy and hasn’t got more than a friend or two at school but it warmed my heart to see and hear the other boys telling each other to “go look at Ollie’s trailer and tent.” We had a bit of a swarm of 6 year olds buzzing around the Maxi for a while.
I must say that our setup isn’t fancy but it’s ours and we make it work for us.
