Would be interesting to know how many Metalians have been sold in total Mini/Midi/Maxi and also RSA versus Australia? Bush Lapa has been numbering their caravans since inception and it was clear to see how their numbers/production increased exponentially.

Henk and Jenny (Ultimate Overland) have also been very quiet on this thread?

I kick myself on a regular basis for ever letting my Maxi go. Would therefore love to know that all is still well with Metalian.

I have not kept a count, but we have not sold anywhere near the same amount of trailers as BL have sold caravans. Probably about one third. About half the production is now going to Australia (so SA sales are down quite substantially). Australia is a very tough market to trade in. This has taken a lot of focus and money, and we're happy that we have "launched" and that the brand is well received.

We will need to look at new models/product because the trailer market in SA must now be a very small pool. I'm not sure what the other brands are doing.

I've been quiet for some time, because I sort of picked up from the forum that you can only push your brand so much and then members become a bit oversold on your tripe. So unless I actually have something new to add, I'll leave it up to owners to post. You are however always welcome to send a PM or ask a direct question live and I'll answer this.

You should here more from me shortly though.

Did a quick once-over on our Maxi today. Planning one of those (dumb ) cold, winter weekend trips. Bearings all OK, tyres fine, coupler damper working fine, handbrake holds the beast from rolling forward, enough dirt on it from previous trip to look legit etc etc.... so while I had it jacked up on the one side I thought let's check the effect of the run-in brakes by pushing in the coupler while one wheel was spinning.

I had to push almost 80% of the travel to get the wheel slowing. Next held the coupler in all the way (ratchet strap) and went to spin the wheel. It turned with difficulty (as expected) but I could still turn it with one hand - when released it stopped immediately. Before I chase after brake adjustments (prematurely?), is this normal? I knew it shouldn't lock like it does when the handbrake is applied but did expect it to be a more difficult to turn the wheel with one hand. Repeated on the other side and same result.

I'm a bit confused. Wheels lock in forward rotation when you apply the handbrake, but when you jack the trailer up to free the wheels, pull in the coupler with a rachet strap (i.e. apply the brakes), and then rotate the wheels forwards or backwards? The coupler run in is connected to the handbrake and operates the same brake cable, so there should be no difference. If your rotating backwards, this is the auto reverse function that is kicking in.

Not looking at anything regarding reverse activating (that worked perfectly last time I reversed into driveway) and only rotating wheel forwards.

Agree same cable so should be no difference however when I hold coupler in fully I can still rotate either jacked up wheel forward with one hand. Just trying to get a feel for (1) how much and (2) when the coupler / run-in brake should start activating and what force is expected on the wheels when coupler pushed in fully (ie going downhill). Driving I haven't had any issues while towing/braking at all but then again neither have I had when towing an unbraked Venter - not comparing though.

I had a foam mattress made a few years ago, 120mm. Makes a huge difference. I canít remember the place but it was done at a place somewhere on Maraisburg road near Langlaagte. I would say 100mm would have been better because the tent doesnít fold up as easily as I would like.

What's good practice with regards to towing with the jockey wheel.

I've always towed with it in place but was recently advised to remove it completely.

If it's tight leave it. Taking off you'll lose it on trip 3......

Honey Badger, I'm sorry not to have seen your reply earlier (I don't get on the forum as much as I should). The simplest answer I have for you is that the "push-in" distance on the coupler is directly related to the travel distance of the brake lever, so the easiest way to check correct settings is to roll the trailer forward and apply the brakes - the brakes should lock in at 90 degrees. (I don't know if your handle has been modified - these days we cut this and reweld into a more downward position, so in this instance the lever won't reach 90 degrees.

The other check is that in reverse the trailer brake should apply when the lever is deployed - if not - you have too much travel in the system and the brakes need adjustment. In very early model Metalians, the nosecone would limit this travel and the brake lever would bottom out on the nosecone before the brake could apply. I'll need to know more about your specific build to give your a 100% answer.

All that said, I think that you possibly can't get the brakes to apply because you aren't pushing hard enough on the coupler to actually make an impact Just a thought.

Just had some great service again this morning at Metalian. I had a small issue with the spare wheel swingarm which I fitted myself. Sky and the guys at assembly assisted with friendly service, sorted out the part that did not fit, and gave my rear bar and swingarm installation the thumbs-up.
Half of the value of a product is often in the after sales service.

Thank you Heinz, Sky, and the chap that assisted (unfortunately I did not take his name).

    Hi

What fridge/freezer was the fridge slide in a maxi designed to carry.

We currently have a 45l Campmaster but want to upgrade to a fridge/freezer combo. Are the runners adjustable to allow the slide to come out further?

It seems the slide only comes out far enough to allow a fridge of about 720mm max length. Height and width are fine for the bigger fridges.

Just some pics to show you guys our new tent with 270 degree awning. The mechanism is made in Cape Town, but the canvas work and some poles are changed in Australia to produce what must be the most successful 270 awning and trailer tent combination. Note that either component, the awning or the tent can be independently deployed, and when both are setup, they join up to form one unit with no folds, open gaps or leaks.

The awning is on a lift bracket that swivels down to the rear. This is particularly good because it retracts the awning front from sticking out up front and shifts weight to the rear of the trailer, lightening the ball weight during travel. Also, when erecting the awning, more cover is given to the fridge area.

I've also added some updates to the kitchen, notably the new stainless steel lids and the side panel to the fridge. The fridge is now held down with fixings under the fridge and no longer requires hold down straps.
