    Apoc,
Can you tell us a little more about the lowered tow hitch you had fitted on your Metalian? Did you install? I recently saw Jannie (Kubu 4x4) detail his troubles with too low a towball height on his Amarok. I also have nose down on our setup (mainly cause I tow with a platkar at the moment.)
    thx

You can fit a drop plate on the Metalian trailer if the trailer is towing nose down, but this does not offer you more breakover clearance, the brake assembly still extends down a bit lower than the ball height. You'll need to lift the tow ball, and this is not always possible with some platkarre, without making some sort of flip up/down ball that is not in the way of opening a rear boot door.

    Help please....
what tent have all you Maxi owners put on your trailer, and why?
Im swaying between the Tentco Senior Tent priced at about 15k, and the Howlingmoon XT Deluxe priced at 20k.
So looking at the numbers the choice should be obvious. However...
    1. apparently the Tentco has to be customized by Henk in order for the doors of the Metalian to open. +- 3k
    2. I am 1.95 m tall, so a bed extension is a necessity. +-2.5k
    3. I currently have a Howlingmoon roof top on my Fortuna, and during the floods in Kruger in January, it didn't leak a drop while fellow campers around me were floating away. The quality is exceptional, and highly robust.

The Howlingmoon XT comes standard with a bed extension, so no additional cost, and I am not sure if modification to the tent is necessary for the Metalian doors to open? Maybe Henk can answer that.

The last point is that apparently the Tentco base is made of wood which buckles etc. over time. That is what I've read on the forum, so purely here say on my part. My Howlingmoon roof top base is made from what looks like thick plastic. I assume the TT will be made from same material.

Or should I be looking at a different option all together?

Obviously the tent is an expensive part of the build, and I would rather not find myself changing to something else a year down the line, because I haven't done my homework.

Help and input much appreciated in advance 😉

We have the HM XT Classic. Lovely tent but we are considering having it custom fit as it doesn't quite work with the cupboards.

The floor space is important to us so we can fit another 3 stretchers in there for our kids. Two is on stacked disc-o-beds and the youngest on a standard stretcher that we made shorter. then we still have enough space in front of the trailer to get dressed.

We have a 2010 Howling Moon with tailgate awning and 3 side panels to enclose entire area. Custom fitment to bedroom side. Was done by previous owner.

Mod is really useful and I would suggest you have it done. Schlep to open and ten close zips to access bedroom side doors.

The last point is that apparently the Tentco base is made of wood which buckles etc. over time. That is what I've read on the forum, so purely here say on my part. My Howlingmoon roof top base is made from what looks like thick plastic. I assume the TT will be made from same material.

If you plan to do lots of overlanding and stay a day or two then move on etc I would go with the Conqueror tent. It is just quicker than anything else; fewer poles, pegs, ropes. Also would need a mod to bedroom side and you MUST buy it with the base to fit on a Metalian Maxi. (Conqueror bed extension is also bigger than the HM one).

Obviously the tent is an expensive part of the build, and I would rather not find myself changing to something else a year down the line, because I haven't done my homework.

    😉
The XT does not come with the bed extension. This is the difference on the Deluxe model. The HM base is insulated sandwhich construction of aluminium skins, polystyrene core and pine frame enclosed in aluminium frame. The other difference is that HM have the zip on cover which does keep dust and water out better.

Unimog, don't make the same mistake I made. Had a Maxi fully kitted out for our purposes, but due to various issues just couldn't manage sleeping in the RTT for weeks on end (bad back; small kids falling off; you get the idea). On the spur of the moment we sold it at a give-away price and I ordered a 4 sleeper caravan. Worst decision ever. Nothing wrong with the van as it ticks all the boxes, but I've never felt comfortable going off-road with it as it's way too heavy for my liking.

What I'm considering now is to get a Maxi again with no RTT but rather 2 Oztent's.

Maybe consider different options before getting rid of your Maxi?

    This thread is absolute BS....

    I read it
For some reason I liked it
Then I spent money (I bought a freakin Maxi)
Now I'm getting quotes on improvements (more money)
My wife is bugging me with planning dates out in the middle of nowhere
And I will probably spend late nights tinkering and loosing sleep

So....you tell me. What's so super about it?
