Your trailer was the most inspiring one I have seen. One of your pics here to remind readers what 10 out of 10 looks like in a Metalian

Well, still a very satisfied SS Maxi owner. Just spent three weeks in Kruger with all camp sites empty. The only problem we had was a blow out on the N1 on the way back. I felt a bit of vibration on the steering wheel on the Disco and looked in the rear view mirror to see blue smoke billowing from the driver side trailer wheel. We pulled over to find the complete destruction of the tyre per the attached image. These tyres are two years old and have done under 10,000 km of soft-roading. I've never had a puncture with a BF let alone this. Fortunately, the tyre remained on the rim so no damage was done. An hour of sweat in the sun saw us on our way again.

Grief Glad you guys are OK.
Did you find out anything more? Was there a puncture from a nail or other debris that caused flat tyre that you may have missed before driving off? I missed a flat wheel once (investigation showed it had had a slow puncture) and had similar blowout on relatively new Continental tyre (vehicle A4).

Amazingly the trailer didn't flinch. The only sign of a problem was the vibration on the steering wheel. I think if the tyre had come off the rim it could have been more serious. The tyres looked fine when we left Phalaborwa where we fuelled the Disco and I did a final all round check before hitting the open road. The bloke at TWT reckoned there must have been a nick in the sidewall looking at the nature of the failure. I've had a blow out before where a hole 4 inches wide blew through the sidewall but never a complete delamination of the sidewall.

I once sent a trailer to Jhb with client supplied rims and tyres. The driver had towed this up. Just outside Worcester one of the tyres looked like this as well. We did not have a spare on the trailer as only the two tyres had been sent down from Jhb to save cost. Had a scramble locating an identical tyre and then a run out to Worcester to get the rim, change the tyre and get the driver on his way again.

I think this is just a normal puncture that is not noticed in time and then goes on to destroy the tyre completely.

Maybe those remote pressure gauges aren't such a bad idea.

I agree Heinz, I will be installing remote gauges. I've looked at it before but never found a brand that didn't have some bad press. Is there a brand that can be recommended?

Good question I'd also like to know the answer to.

That tyre above has run some distance while severely underinflated; the side walls break up like that when that happens.

The interesting thing is that the inside sidewall was completely intact. I suppose when the heat from deflation builds up it lets go at the weakest point.

It's possible the tyre shifted to the outside and the inside wall just folded inwards, while the outside wall folded outwards and then back in on itself and the rim road on this part of the tyre. I note the rim had no damage at all.

I'm sorry I didn't take a pic of the tyre after stopping. The smoke coming from the tyre panicked me a bit. But the tyre was as you see it in my photo, with both beads in place and running on the destroyed sidewall which obviously led to a bit more damage of the sidewall. The rim is 100% with no buckling (I observed the new tyre being fitted) or physical damage.

    Hi Nigel,
I use a Tyreguard available from Abraham on the Forum when towing my trailer. I prefer a TyreDog system that I also have when not using the trailer as it allows me to see the pressure simultaneously on all 4 wheels.

The Tyreguard does trigger an aural warning if something is amiss.

Both systems are a bit "rough" on the valve stems due to the extra weight at the end of the valve stem. The extra flexing tends to damage the valve stem over time. A friend also had considerable damage to his Landrover alloy rims from the pressure sensor. I put a tightly fitting piece of plastic tubing over the valve stem to limit some of the movement, this seems to help.

And there in lies the problem with that system. In Mabua it got to the stage where we had to replace a valve - not easy in the middle of no where- precisely because the valve stem had worn through. I think you get a version that goes inside the tyre and not on the valve? But the security of seeing both air pressure and temp is really great.

Was great meeting Heinz today at the Beeld show. Walking through the halls and seeing all the different trailers just made me more proud of my metalian. Thanks for the spare wheel cover Heinz. Oh and I almost didn't recognise Henk with his big beard sitting like Santa on his sled in the new concept caravan.
