    Default Chimes

My son and I went to Chimes on Sunday to test the bighorns, but it had rained and the sand was hard. After driving every path we could find, we decided to return to the big dune and see how far I could get up. The place was packed with quads and bikes and after 2 close shaves with quads called it quits and went home. My son followed me everywhere with his 4x2 clubby, it was only when finding soft sand that he had to use momentum to clear the obstacles, so no real challenge to check the potential of the Bighorns.

Hey Naks, where's the 4x4 pics?, nice view though.... nothing better than feeling & smelling the fresh sea air

Tankgirl, you seem busy sweetie, nice one, I ain't a fan of rock but it's always supercool to show props to anyone making the effort to make their way Nice one!

Drizzt - Nice pics there man , that Fortuner looks kitted out to the max, I also like those pics of your stud cocking its leg.... good work, looks like a fun trip

Well I ain't been up to much recently apart from last weekend when the old man and I went to Kruger for 3 nights before the holiday week started8) I tell you what, it's always great to get up there!

We decided on day 2 to do the Madlabantu 4x4 trail at Pretoruiskop in my Cherokee BTW, do you guys know that there are 5 4x4 trails in the Kruger
There's the 5 day Lebombo trail that runs right up the right hand side of the Kruger.
    The Madlabantu trail at Pretoriuslop
    The Mananga Trail at Satara
The Nonokani Trail at Phalaborwa gate
and the Northern Plains trail at Punda Maria/Shingwedzi

First up, if you go to Kruger then you'd best let all know what you've seen... he he.... well.... WE SAW THE BIG 5!!!!! Yup, those frickken leopard did not get away from us this time!!!!

    Here's the pics to prove!!!

    Elephant, almost guaranteed viewing

Rhino - OK.. so it's not Black (which is part of the true Big 5), but White is good enough for me!

Then Buffalo, only saw Daggaboys on this trip, the big herds elluded us!

Now the good Stuff... on the very early drive to Pretoriuskop, we chanced across 4 lion on the road, 2 female, and 2 male, here are the males

Then not more than 5kms further we stumbled across this extremely pretty looking leopard making it's way in the same direction - This was the bonus we wanted - getting to see Leopard is super rare

Anyways, we managed to get going on the trail at about 8am. And a very nice trail it was. I've done the trail at Satara, and to be honest with you a 4x2 bakkie or any vehicle with a little more extra ground clearance could have done that one!

Now the Pretoriuskop trails was a bit more enjoyable, numerous stream crossings with some reasonable inclines and declines made it a great 5 hours. Add to this the fact that for the whole time we did not encounter 1 other vehicle made the trail memorable. Particularly memorable was when we stopped at a dam (can't remember the name) and all around us were hippo, elephant, impala, waterbuck and loads of feathery friends.

One warning though - do this trail and your vehicle WILL get scratched! This is the only negative I had....

Here's the old man, we stopped for a coldie and some padkos

Good thing about doing these Kruger 4x4 trails is that you are allowed to exit your vehicle...

Here's the dam where we stopped

Super trip, I'm looking forward to doing the other 2 short trails, and then the Lebombo trail one day8)

Went to Clanwilliam for the weekend, stayed at Traveller's Rest (http://www.travellersrest.co.za/)

Did some hiking on the Sevilla Rock Art trail to see Bushman's rock paintings, and on the Saturday we took a road trip to Wupperthal, Matjiesrivier & Algeria.

The 'road' from Wuppethal to Matjiesriver is scary in the rain - 4x4 should not be recommended but required!

What we did the last 2 weekends:

Weekend of the 26th, we competed in the Swazi Reg Raid - 2 days of absolutely stunning offroad driving!

The past weekend we were at 3 provinces for their "treasure hunt" fundraising event, where we did the Witkruis-arend route on Thursday, had some rain (and COLD) on Friday and did the 3 provinces route on Saturday, still a bit wet and quite slippery. Also took the drive up the infamous "Helshoogte".

Finally I can sit at work and "relax"

    Nice one all

I'm expecting quite a few more posts seeing as all the 4x4's will be back at home after the holiday weekend...

    More pics and stories all

This weekend just passed I planned my upgrades to my Jeep. Having an Ironman Suspension system installed and a new set of 245/70/16 Bridgestone Duelers D694 put on, should get it back after lunch today

    Thumbs up Moegatle 26/27 April

Moegatle remains, to me, the best trail in the Pta/Jhb area. And the final descent on "God se pad" the scariest.. You have to book the 2 day trail to get to drive the rocks, though.
1 The kids crawling out of a donga.
2 The approach to the final descent of "God se pad".

    3 Provinces route:

Pic 1 & 2: Rangie hanging for dear life after it slipped on the wet rocks and due to the incline.

Pic 3: Everyone watching the Rangie getting saved.

Pic 4, 5 & 6: Helshoogte, Commander was second to go up, no problems, myself went up 5th, by that time ALL the rocks was full of mud and loose, had lots of fun! Eventually needed a bit of help from some of the guys, just to pull me over the wet stuff.
    No comment about the Hilux....

Pic 7: Using about 3 cm of thread on the left tyres!

    Hey Landylover

Great pics there . The driver of the Range Rover must have just about pooped his pants after that one! Big smiles and hand shakes all round once he was recovered I'll bet....
