Default paying for fuel in Tanzania

We will be crossing into Tanzania from Zambia by Lake Tanganyika. Will petrol stations in Tanzania accept cards or can you pay in Dollars or do you have to pay in Shillings? Any help appreciated.

As far as I know they don't accept any cards. Our Guide went to the ATM to pay in cash at fill up stations. In Hotels you can pay in US$ but on a petrol station i don't know.

Some places do take cards, but you need to check that the machine is working. I had a situation once where I asked if they took cards, they said yes. I filled up with 500 litres of diesel and then they told me the machine was broken!
You can pay dollars, but will get shafted on exchange rates, it is better to pay Shillings cash.

We have just been in Tanzania. You can use cards at some places, shillings cash is more reliable. As noted above you will get screwed on the rate if you try to use forex.

We have been looking for places with card machines but have not had much luck. Shillings are best.

We travelled from Tanzania to Zambia via Mbala and found that we could exchange our shillings into Kwacha at a reasonable rate and it was considered to be legit. This was done at the Zambia Sugar shop in Mbala - they may do an exchange the other way around. We always used cash (shillings) when we were buying fuel.

    Cheers,
