Exclamation Warning: Accident damaged forester for sale in parklands

I've spotted my old Forester on Gumtree. It was writen off by the insurance after the front end was smashed in a ditch. It is now being advertised as "accident free".

Model: 2008 Subaru Forester (SG) 2.5XT
    Colour: Garnet red
    VIN: JF2SG9KD37G095901

    http://www.gumtree.co.za/cp-cars-in-...o-go-521200263

I identified the vehicle by the Alpine radio and home-made mudflaps I've installed.

The number on gumtree is 073 652 9563. Give the guy some crap

I can supply all my correspondence with the insurance company as well as the original owners manual and service book along with the radio owners manual. That will be solid proof.

I have already reported the add.

The real skelms are the insurers - they have written off your vehicle but have not scrapped it on NATIS, as Code 2 salvage vehicles can be sold for a much higher price than a Code 3.

I feel for the person who buys it not realizing it was scrapped, but as they say Karma's a B***h

so they wrote it off then repaired it, or sold it and buyer repaired it? sounds like you can trust no one.

I agree this person has to let them know about the damage
I think that is the main issue here not that it was repaired just that the idiot is hiding that

I know of many vehicles that have been written off by the insurance even though their actual damage is relatively minor

if the repair would cost more than certain percentage of the cars worth then most insurers will write it off on their books

in fact I had a XT250 that was stolen and when I got it back it had some cosmetic damage I submitted a quote for all the parts and the insurer came back and said I needed to take it to one of their places for quote

they then said no it is too expensive to fix they need to scrap it so I told them I wanted it back
they took 30% off from the payout and paid me the rest of the money
I fixed the bike and replaced all the damaged bits and took the left over R2000 and used it on holiday (I was 18 at the time)

Forester nutter here so watch out

Please remember that I think I'm funny
    (most people don't agree)
thus take 90% of what I post with 2 pinches of salt

Same thing with my TDI300. Hit a cow one night and had front end damage, radiators, water pump + 1 door and windows. Chassis was pushed back 50mm on the left hand rail.

Assessor quoted 65K to repair (including 2 "bent" prop shafts at 8K apiece) and insisted on writing it off.

I said No-Way, I'll take the payout which was a battle of note as the assessor refused. I repaired it myself for 25K. The only thing I had done by a body shop was to straighten the chassis (R2500) Everything and I mean each and every part on the assessors quote had more than a 120% markup. The prop shafts - nothing wrong with them at all!

I personally believe that there are assessors out there (I'm not generalizing as I know there are honest ones as well) that make "deals" with vehicles that they write off.

    Sorry for the Hijack.

I would like to know the status of the vehicle on eNatis. I think TransUnion offers a one time free vehicle check for new members (I've used mine up already). Check what the status is on that, if it shows that the car hasn't been written off, then that constitutes fraud, no?

You can use TransUnion HPI or Lightstone (Lightstone is far cheaper, about R 70 I think) to check on the car's licensing status, and accident history. To buy a car nowadays without doing this is crazy..

Does the seller actually know that it was in an accident?

What has happened to me before, was that my car was deemed economical to repair, so the insurance repaired it. The repairs were shocking to say the least. After a bit of a tiff with the insurance, they wrote it off, paid me out, and I went car hunting again.

This does not necessarily mean that they made it a code 3. It just means they wrote it off in their books, and paid me out. They then proceeded to sell the car.

It is still driving around in PE - still dog tracking just as it did when it left the panel beaters. I even received a R500.00 fine for that car not stopping at a 4-way stop 4 months after I handed it back to the insurance...

Written off by insurance (not economical to repair) is not the same as written off at traffic department.

Yes, people often confuse the two, and insurance write off is not what most people think a write off is... the guy selling the forrester, why is there problem... if the car has been repaired and sold maybe once or twice, the current owner may NOT even be aware that the car was in an accident.

My biggest concern is that the car is advertised as accident free.

The left front wheel bent rearward by two inches....

You will note if you have a look at the add there are no pictures from the left or front ends.

So the seller is perfectly aware the car was damaged, I also phoned him and made sure that he knows.
